Flo (floadargmailcom) | 48 comments Author is French, last name starts with D. It got a good review in the New York Times about 2-3 months ago, but forgot to write his name and don't really know what it's about. A longish one. I think I saw the book in a bookstore a couple of weeks ago but am no longer near that store. I'll try another one tomorrow. My memory is not what it once was. Even 5 years ago this could not happen to me!

Flo, I moved your request to the Unsolved folder because you're looking for a specific book.

What's the genre? What's the book about?

What year did you see the New York Times review?

Please add plot details to your Topic header to help people searching for books. Click "edit" beside the header if you're on the desktop (not mobile) version of the website. Just ask if you'd like some help.

Hmmm...your edits didn't seem to "take." I edited the header.

Brightfellow by Rikki Ducornet? But she's female and the book isn't long.

A Hero of France by Alan Furst? He's not French though.

Ladivine by Marie NDiaye? Also a woman.

The Life of Elves by Muriel Barbery? Again, a woman, not the letter D. But she is French.

There's White Sands: Experiences from the Outside World by Geoff Dyer but I don't think he's French.

Sudden Death by Álvaro Enrigue. But he's Mexican.

How sure are you about the D, and is it fiction or nonfiction, what genre?

Flo (floadargmailcom) | 48 comments Thanks for your efforts. I forgot to mention that the book is a novel and a translation to English from French. I am truly sorry for the inconvenience. Hope this narrows it down.

The U.S. edition was published in July.

Flo (floadargmailcom) | 48 comments Sorry, Natasha. The writer is a man. I appreciate your effort. Thanks a lot.

When you said "a longish one" did you mean the author's last name, or the book?

message 12: by Flo (new)

Flo (floadargmailcom) | 48 comments The author's name. I completely forgot the name of the book. And maybe he isn't French but Italian...Belgian...Dutch... I couldn't get to a bookstore yet but I will definitely go by one tomorrow for sure and see if I can find it. Meanwhile, suggest you wait a day because there are too many unsure things in my query. Thanks a lot anyway. Believe me, I appreciate it.

Rachel Gill | 33 comments It's not 'All The Light We Cannot See' by Anthony Doerr is it? About a blind french girl and a german boy...

message 14: by Flo (new)

Flo (floadargmailcom) | 48 comments No, Rachel. Sorry. I read that. Did not much like it. Too sweet. My book is much newer.

Irene Tait (angryirene) | 9 comments Flo, do you know much of anything about the plot, or subject material? Historical fiction, romance, foodie book, etc?

My only suggestion would be to check out the NY times review of French Lit from August, as there are several books that ~could~ be your novel in there.

Here is the link - http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/14/boo... - hope this helps!

message 16: by Flo (new)

Flo (floadargmailcom) | 48 comments Thanks for the link, Irene. It wasn't listed altho some of these look really good, so I'm going to check them out.

I went by a bookstore this morning and found it and did not buy it. It's Jean-Paul Didierlaurent's book: The Reader on the 6.27.

I thought I could buy it on Amazon for my Kindle but they dont have it yet as an ebook in English so I'll have to go back to the bookstore to get it.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. You all are wonderful!

I will designate this as SOLVED.

I marked this as a "To Read," also. Sounds very interesting. The fragments of books idea makes me think of If on a Winter's Night a Traveler.

Flo (floadargmailcom) | 48 comments Thanks. I will check that out as well.
