Flo, I moved your request to the Unsolved folder because you're looking for a specific book.
What's the genre? What's the book about?
What year did you see the New York Times review?
Please add plot details to your Topic header to help people searching for books. Click "edit" beside the header if you're on the desktop (not mobile) version of the website. Just ask if you'd like some help.

Thanks. Done and done.
Brightfellow by Rikki Ducornet? But she's female and the book isn't long.
A Hero of France by Alan Furst? He's not French though.
Ladivine by Marie NDiaye? Also a woman.
The Life of Elves by Muriel Barbery? Again, a woman, not the letter D. But she is French.
There's White Sands: Experiences from the Outside World by Geoff Dyer but I don't think he's French.
Sudden Death by Álvaro Enrigue. But he's Mexican.
How sure are you about the D, and is it fiction or nonfiction, what genre?

The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud?
The First Thing You See by Grégoire Delacourt?
Customer Service by Benoît Duteurtre?

My only suggestion would be to check out the NY times review of French Lit from August, as there are several books that ~could~ be your novel in there.
Here is the link - http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/14/boo... - hope this helps!

I went by a bookstore this morning and found it and did not buy it. It's Jean-Paul Didierlaurent's book: The Reader on the 6.27.
I thought I could buy it on Amazon for my Kindle but they dont have it yet as an ebook in English so I'll have to go back to the bookstore to get it.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help. You all are wonderful!
I will designate this as SOLVED.
Glad you found your book, Flo. Here's the GR link - The Reader on the 6.27 by Jean-Paul Didierlaurent.

Flo wrote: "Ok, figured it out. Again thanks."
I marked this as a "To Read," also. Sounds very interesting. The fragments of books idea makes me think of If on a Winter's Night a Traveler.
