Are there any other tortured hero fans on this group?

I love them. Why?

They just make me fall in love with them and my heart bleed and hurt for them. I think a dangerous, tortured hero is a perfect combination, because they can scare you but at the same time, they are like a wounded animal you just want to love and heal and soothe.

What are your thoughts on tortured heroes?

Is there any other kind? *arches eyebrow*
A tortured hero always has a past; he is that way because of something that happened. And I am an emotional paleontologist and like to dig and know what made him be who he is, what makes him tick. And also I fancy myself as an emotional farmer- can't help but try to help people grow.
All kidding aside, yes, I like to see people grow, and change, and be happy. A tortured hero gives me all of that. I am an eternal Pollyanna, hoping and believing and praying for happy endings.

I love your phraseology, Peridot_Lyoness. Emotional paleontologist. Awesome!

Lol. You are sweet, thanks! Someone once said "seek first to understand" and I abide by those words. Before I judge someone's actions, I like to have all the facts and I'm willing to patiently look and carefully dig until I figure things out.
A good author will give you enough of a background to understand someone's seemingly mean or unreasonable decisions.

So true. ☺

Peridot_Lyoness | 26 comments So, everybody, who is your favorite tortured hero and why? I have two, both from the Black Dagger Brotherhood: Zsadist and Vishous. Both are incredibly damaged, have been incredibly hurt, but ended up handling it differently. One internalizes and the other externalizes the pain. So, who is yours?

My favorite torture hero is Sam Starrett, because despite the way he was raised, he did not let that determine who he was going to be. He became a man and raised above his childhood life living with his parents. He had come to know of an uncle he never had and that man loved him as he was his own son. Sam truly needed that love. He also needed Noah to be a brother to him and not just a cousin. I wished their relationship didn't fade away, because of the lives they took. Suzanne should have kept them with a strong bond. Noah is family to Sam. He was there for Sam going up.

I love how Sam made sure that he was a good father to his son. I'm glad that his love for his child was written. We needed to see a father and son bond. Ash is Sam's baby.

I'm not familiar with Sam, but I added the book to my to-read list. His story sounds pretty compelling.

I personally am very attracted to tortured lead characters. I think it's cathartic to read an angsty book in which a main character goes through a lot of bad stuff but comes out good in the end. I don't like my leads to be too perfect. I can't relate and I actually don't care. I want to see a flawed person get their happy ending.

I think that even after thirty years of romance novel reading, I will still be drawn to a tortured hero just as much.

I agree... I can't stand those people who are just tooo perfect. Nobody truly is. I do admire those that hit bottom and get up and make something out of an awful situation.

Peridot_Lyoness, you might just fall in love with Sam. He's first introduced in Suzanne Brockmann's Book The Unsung Hero. He has a small part in it, but it's the book where he and his future love is introduced and can't stand one another.
