I finished. My interest in the story steadily decreased over the course of the novel. You can find my review here: review. I don't think I quite got the explanation of why I disliked the 'calendar science' so much. Its all just too 'hand-wavey' to me.

At the end of the novel, the merged Cheris/Jedao go off to uncover a possible conspiracy within the hexarchate. Somewhere in the middle of this book I was curious about the same thing, but now I'm not at all bothered to find out.

I forgot to post here. I like it. I just basically had to redefine the science as magic in my head. I'm fine with hand-wavey. I enjoyed the story once I ignored the science.
