Please post your general questions about the Winter 2016 Challenge here. Specific questions about individual tasks should be posted in the Help Threads for those tasks.

Leslie Ann | 45 comments Can we use books that we started before the challenge but finish within the challenge?

I hope this is what you found:

Books longer than 499 pages that were started any time before the beginning of a challenge can be used to fulfill a task if more than half the book is read during the challenge.

For example, if you were to read 249 pages (or less) of a 500 page book before the start of a challenge, this book would count if it met a task requirement. However, if you had read 250 pages (or more) of a 500 page book before the start of a challenge, this book would not count.

Books less than 500 pages should NOT be begun before the start of a challenge.

Louise | 226 comments I noticed that there will be no 20.8 task this winter because nobody qualified. Is there a thread that outlines how to qualify for tasks? I realize you get a task if you finish the previous challenge but I was wondering whether it was more complex than that. Thanks!

Looks like a new thread was just started fresh:

Probably just post exactly what you posted above so they know to pull you from the archives!

You will need to request a Readerboard name. Your old name has been archived and we will need to pull out up old records.

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 157 comments For tasks without page requirements, do we need to link the MMPB/PB editions in addition to the edition we read/listen to? In other words, for every ebook/audiobook I listen to, do I need to post both the edition I read and the MMPB/PB edition, or does that only need to be done when there are page minimums listed?

Cathy, MMPB/PB posting along with the edition you read is not required if page counts are not a part of the task.

just make sure that there IS a paper copy of the book listed on GR with page numbers. Even if there is no task minimum, your book must meet the general SRC requirements - and if there is no paper copy listed with page numbers, the post will be rejected if that problem is not addressed before posting - either by getting page numbers added to a paper copy or by getting a book that only exists on GR in ebook form approved.

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments Hello, I wanted to confer with the mods about In the Company of Women: Inspiration and Advice from over 100 Makers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs - it's been tagged with "Art" on the MPGs. There does seem to be a significant written component with each woman's profile along with the photographs but I'd rather ask permission than forgiveness before I try to claim it for a task ;)

From the "look inside" on amazon, it appears to have lots of pictures but also lots of text. You'll have to look for yourself to whether it has 100+ pages of text, since more than just selected pages is necessary to determine that. If it does, then it works for SRC purposes.

Thanks Sandy! So far, it appears that there's about 1-2 pages of written content for every big photograph page. I'll have to see if the ratio keeps up throughout the book (it's over 350p, so if it holds then it'll end up at >100p written content). ;)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments Quick golden oldie question. I'm looking to read Dickens at Christmas this challenge. All the stories must have been written before 1870, when Dickens died, but this particular collection is giving a first published date of 2012. Can it be claimed for a golden oldie?

The book must have been published 1950 or earlier. We cannot analyze the contents of a book, story by story, to evaluate it.

Griesgundel van Feldenfloeven Hi, I found your group and think that your challenge is truly awesome! But I am not an english native, I don't live in an english speaking country and I get books mostly from the library (so I don't read much in english). Is this a problem for this challenge? I would choose the books according to their english title/pages of the english edition/etc. and read them on german. Or is that a no-go?

that's fine. You may need to provide more info when you post a task, since the mods are English-speaking.

message 31: by Griesgundel (new)

Griesgundel van Feldenfloeven Oh thats great!
And of course I understand that some german gibberish would need some explanation - but I dont take a focus on books of german origin anyway... just wanted to clear that up so I dont feel like a bloody cheater :D

Be careful on some tasks- from the rules "Any task requiring a specific title (number of letters, number of words, specific word in title, etc.) should apply to the title that you use."
So for tasks like 10.5. Noel! there should be no L in the title of the edition you read. You should not use the English language edition unless that's the edition you read.
Please ask in the task help thread if you need help working it out.

message 33: by Griesgundel (new)

Griesgundel van Feldenfloeven Oh thats actually a pity (it sounds kinda lonely) - I guess I will look for another group then. Thanks for the explanation :)

The only tasks that will be a problem for you are the ones that require a specific English word in the title. All other tasks should work just as well with a German book.

Task creators are expected to responded within 5 days. Your question was posted 3 days ago, and many people are vacationing for Christmas. If the task creator doesn't respond in a couple more days, I will respond to your question.

message 40: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Lemes (hoodoomends) | 197 comments I'm reading The Early Cases of Akechi Kogoro for one of the tasks. This edition is a collection of short stories by Rampo Edogawa translated to English, but there isn't an original Japanese collection. Originally the stories "were all published in the first half of 1925 as part of Rampo's first serial for Shin-Seinen magazine", as we can see in this link.

My question is: may I claim a GO ticket since the stories were originally published in 1925?

No, we go by when the book you read was published, not when individual stories were published.

Jody (jodybell) Hello! I've been directed to this thread for my question by Marie.

For her task (30.4 - Mazza1's Task: Readers Recommend), in Option 6, there is a specific list of books provided - Time Top 100 Non-Fiction Books. I am wondering if #6 is included, being a Graphic Novel.

In my mind, if a specific list of books is provided, then every book on the list is permitted, but I'm not sure which rule overrides which in this group.

Thanks!

Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may only be used for 5, 10, and 15 point tasks unless specifically allowed in the task description for a higher point task.

Task 30.4 does not have the allowance. Graphic novels do not work for that task.

Not every book on a list may work for a task. There may be books that do not meet page requirements or Accelerated Reader Children's book limits.

For the Fantasy Standalone, what defines a series? Is it if it's a numbered series on Goodreads like: Watership Down? or The Fairy Godmother?
