Elise F (elise_literaryhabitat) | 16 comments There is a LOT of Roth on the lists (I'm using the combined) ... any recommendations on where to start? I was thinking maybe chronologically, but I would like to hear which ones people loved, so I read one of them first!

Nicola | 770 comments I've only read two so far American Pastoral and Portnoy's Complaint. Both were audiobooks and the narrator (Silver I'm fairly sure) did a fantastic job.

Superficially they weren't at all similar but they both had a strong theme of 'Male Jewish man in America and how tough it can be'. It was obviously strongest in Portnoy which was one long, frequently hilarious rant about how much being jewish sucks, how irritating jewish parents are and how many non jewish white girls he was able to bang. The book is pretty salty which hopefully people know before they start reading it :-)

I enjoyed both of them but be aware that American Pastoral had a tendency to cover everything that was talked about in excruciating detail. Every. Little. Thing.

Kirsten (kmcripn) The only Roth I've read isn't like his others - it's a historical novel and I enjoyed it very much: The Plot Against America

Arukiyomi | 271 comments I didn't love it but it's an easy read: Nemesis.
