High Moor, a tale of werewolves and killing, is this month's Other Book of the Month.

It's pretty highly rated, with more 5s than any other category, but also a fair few 2s and 3s, so it'll be interesting to see what people make of it.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments I've started get into this now, enjoying it so far although I did guess who the first werewolf was. It is, obviously, quite bloody but not gratuitous thus far.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments Yes, I am enjoying it too. The action keeps up and the writing is pretty solid.

I'd describe it as an old fashioned werewolf story. None of the shapeshifter/PNR idea there.

Christian W. (cwallers) | 42 comments I downloaded it yesterday and will get started soon. Based on your early feedback I'm looking forward to it.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments Finished! I like info dumps:) The ending is a bit abrupt but leads into book II nicely.

Overall a good read, there is a lot of violence and cussing, but I don't think it is unjustified in the context of the story. I'll leave a review in the next few days.

Sounds like the best received Book of the Month for a while.

A question (non-spoilerish) on the ending/story:
Does it read as a self-contained story or more as part one of three (or however many there are)?

With a series it's always tricky to try and make each book make sense and be worthwhile as a solo read whilst also a cohesive part of a greater whole. [I apologise for how pretentious that sounds].

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments There is a cliff-hanger, although the story is mostly concluded. I'd say the second one is likely to be tying up loose ends - and dealing with another aspect not fully explored. The ending is realistic (given the circumstances).

As far as I know, looking at the author's profile, there is High Moor II, I have no clue if he plans any more.

I noticed one of the reviews commented on the unrealistic language. The book is mostly told from the POV of some 80s school kids from a poor town in the NE of England. I'd say it was pretty accurate. Yes they swear but it is more, the kids thing of it makes them hard/popular. The parents are more concerned with the world cup (so the adults are quite shallow, but then I have met people like that.) The town is pretty bleak, as it was in the 80s under Thatcher. It may be the setting is better understood by Brits who lived in that era.

There are a few typos, and one slightly unconvincing bit near the end, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments I'll read the second. It kept me interested enough to want to read the follow-up. My review is up.

Christian W. (cwallers) | 42 comments I just finished Part 2 of the story and am enjoying it so far. It is a fun and fast-paced read.

Huzzah, sounds like a great book was picked this time.

There were 2 years between books 1 and 2, so hopefully the third won't be too far off (assuming there is a third, of course).

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments Apart from a slightly dodgy bit right at the end I really enjoyed it. I'd certainly read more from this author.
