Famine (wolfcreed) What titles do you recommend that explain in great detail, the customs & general knowledge concerning day-to-day court & palace life, the palace staff, military & court dress, livery, and other related subjects describing the history behind everything imaginable from the 'common knowledge' topics like epaulettes and gorgets to the 'rarer/uncommon' topics.

Particularly concerning the years between 1700s to 1800s. This is really important so help would be greatly appreciated!

Alina | 1 comments A book that I'm coming to love and you might want to try is Castles, Customs, and Kings: True Tales by English Historical Fiction Authors.

Approximately fifty authors got together and made a book with little bits of information they'd discovered while researching their novels. It's got all sorta of tidbits of information of English history starting in 55 B.C. all the way to 2013. It's got entries on dances, clothes, recipes, etc. I haven't read through the entire book yet, but even so I highly recommend it!

I hope this helps, and good luck with your search! :)

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments These aren't the years you wanted, but if you put them in Amazon maybe it would recommend similar books for the years you want. The basis of both books is to make you feel like you are there in that time period, so they go into a lot of little details about a whole range of subjects (what people ate, what they wore, what their houses were like, how they traveled, etc. - they often provide descriptions by class so you get a good feel for a variety of people).

A wonderful book and I don't believe any of her equally wonderful novels , many of which are about European royalty have been discussed on this site. We have a thriving board for her though !
