So, regardless of the fact that his parents would get in trouble for not looking for him (and the author states clearly that this is the story of if a child DID proceed to run away in the most idyllic of worlds, where no one would go after his parents and safety wasn't as much of an issue, etc) the story is wonderful. I love the tidbits about how to live safely off the land (including the little disclaimers about not trying to each mushrooms, etc), and how beautiful it is, but also how he gets lonely for human companionship eventually.
I don't know that I ever read the sequels, so I'm curious how those turn out!

I remember reading this as a child and REALLY liking it, so I'm looking forward to the re-read!
