Love the concept. Can't believe I haven't read this before. Take martial law in Pakistan and you have the beginnings of an Orwellian future. I think the story can be likened to an army takeover, with the Party being analogous to the army.
It's unexpectedly Kafkaesque. The theme of an irrational authority, things happening without any explanation, and the overall irrationality of the world, is quite reminiscent of Kafka's novels. The only boundary is the fact that here the story is actually progressing instead of going around in circles as it does in Kafka's books.
Great book. I've read it twice, and its movie adaptation was pretty good too.
