Gjuro (gjuroszlikovski) | 101 comments Some books have cover title slightly different from inside the book title. Which one should I use?

Also, in many cases when the author is catholic saint, book cover says, in example: "Saint Francis of Assissi" or "St. Francis" or something like that. There is main page of that author, Francis of Assisi, but should I add cover name as second author, and should I use "saint" or "st." if stated on the cover?

lethe | 16359 comments We use the cover title.

Titles such as Saint are not used in author names on GR.

Oh, I just remembered one more problem: subtitles... So, there is main title of the book. And subtitle written in smaller letters. Some books use it in this form: "Title: subtitle", some books use it like this: "Title - Subtitle", and some books just don't use subtitle... Personally, I sometimes write subtitle, sometimes don't, but I always try to check what library catalogue says, look inside the book, and if it is translated work, I search for original... then decide...

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Gjuro, all of this is covered in the librarian manual, you should probably give it a thorough read.

Subtitles:
"The title field is used for your book title. The title and subtitle should match the title shown on the cover of the book, if that information is available. "

"When a book has a subtitle, the subtitle should be separated from the main title by a language-appropriate separator (in English or if the separator is unknown, use a colon) and a single space. The phrase "A Novel" is not considered a subtitle. "

That's pretty clear, if there is a subtitle on the cover, add it with a colon (not a dash).

Gjuro (gjuroszlikovski) | 101 comments Thank you. I have read the manual (I became librarian recently)... Still learning... But obviously I need to read it again. I even can't remember this text mentioning subtitle... And I know that I have read everything :)

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Each of the teal subtitles in the main librarian manual are links to more detailed instructions - that's where I grabbed that text from.
