Summit Entertainment announced the replacement of “Twilight Saga” star Rachelle Lefevre in the series’ third film, “Eclipse,” on Tuesday night – and fans weren’t the only ones surprised by the news — Rachelle was shocked as well!

“I was stunned by Summit’s decision to recast the role of Victoria for ‘Eclipse,’” Rachelle said in a statement to Access Hollywood.

On Tuesday, Summit announced that Bryce Dallas Howard would be taking on the role in “Eclipse,” due in May 2010.

“I was fully committed to the ‘Twilight’ saga, and to the portrayal of Victoria,” Rachelle continued, explaining the turn of events that led to the casting change. “I turned down several other film opportunities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules. My commitment to ‘Barney’s Version’ is only ten days. Summit picked up my option for ‘Eclipse.’ Although the production schedule for ‘Eclipse’ is over three months long, Summit said they had a conflict during those ten days and would not accommodate me. Given the length of filming for ‘Eclipse,’ never did I fathom I would lose the role over a 10 day overlap. I was happy with my contract with Summit and was fully prepared to continue to honor it. Summit chose simply to recast the part.”

The star concluded her statement with a regretful tone.

“I am greatly saddened that I will not get to complete my portrayal of Victoria for the ‘Twilight’ audience. This is a story, a theatrical journey and a character that I truly love and about which I am very passionate. I will be forever grateful to the fan support and loyalty I’ve received since being cast for this role, and I am hurt deeply by Summit’s surprising decision to move on without me. I wish the cast and crew of ‘Eclipse’ only the very best,” she said.

Rachelle will appear in the series’ next film, “New Moon,” due Nov. 20.

I couldn't find an e-mail for Summit, otherwise I would have started an online petition. All I have are these:

I can't really make a paper petition, so if anyone wants to say anything, I'd try there. They need to know how important having Rachelle is to the Saga.

gosh, well...good luck with that. maybe you can write a letter to them, put it up on goodreads and then get ppl to say that they like the story. thats the equivalent to a petition on goodreads.

No, not a GoodReads petition. An online petition on a website deticated to petitions. But you can't do web petitions without someone to send them to. Like I said, I don't have Summit's email.

Oh, well that sux. they prob didnt put up their email address because they knew that something like this would happen.

I feel kinda bad for Rachelle. I think she did the part well.

I think this is stupid. I actually liked the character because of her. I love at the end how she smiles evily as she comes down the stairs...it give me shivers every time! I think they are being very naive. It seems to me that she was doing her best to uphold her side of the contract. They could at least respect her and uphold their side. Stupid business jerks.

Yes, I wish they would have kept her. They are already filming Eclipse.

Yeah. When all is said and done she's out but I to wish they would have kept her. I mean what is going to happen if one of the other actors or actresses has scheduling problems for Breaking Dawn??

ive seen pics of the new victoria and she dont look right. Rachelle was great. had the whole 'im a wild vamp' thing going on.

She's alright but I still hate it when they switch actors or actresses in the middle of a series.

me too, its really frustrating. i was yelling at my computer when i found out bout the change. i also hate it when they make a film then a few years later another director remakes it. WHATS THE POINT!! i would prefer it if they thaught of new ideas and made NEW films.

I think she looks more Otherworldly and wild than Rachelle. But whatever. What's done is done. I guess we'll see. Wait, we won't see. Victoria isn't even IN New Moon!

I don't really have an opinion about her either way. She plays such a small role in the first and second books but I do hate when they switch actors in the middle.

Apparently she scheduled filming for something else, at the time she was supposed to be filming Eclipse.
