Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments Wow! You are Rusalka to the Ready! Thanks for setting up all the 2017 threads.

I will be starting two new books tomorrow (New Year's Day) - Snow Crash and The Muse. Both books are buddy reads. Snow Crash will also fit in for my Survey Challenge. Before I start the 2017 reading engines, I want to read a short story for the Reckoner's Series, Mitosis.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments Heh it helps when you are in the future! Figured I would get us all ready to go for when you guys catch up.

message 4: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments I'm starting 2017 off with reading In the Woods. I was originally going to read it for the 2016 challenge but ran out of time, so now I'm reading it for the 2017 challenge, cause I don't like olives, lol.

message 5: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'll start Moon Called today, and maybe also The Muse

message 6: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Because I've owned it a long while I started Dragon Avenger. After making it a ways in the book I just went and looked at ratings. People love this book. Ok. That confirms it. This book was not meant for me this series was not meant for me. I'll finish the book. To me it just feels dumbed down. Really I went to see if it was shelved as young adult or children's. Not the shelving that gets used on Goodreads. I think that was the issue I had with the first book. Seemed written for a young audience to me. I don't enjoy young adult books unless they don't actually feel like young adult which is not much of the time. Why did I start the year with a book I knew would only end up being OK at best for me.

message 7: by David (new)

David Manuel (docdave) | 1 comments I have just started reading "Waystation" by Clifford D Simak. I read a lot of science fiction as a youth and for some reason, have revived my interest in the genre. It's quite possible that I read this book at some time in the distant past but that may be one of the few virtues of a poor memory!
Happy New Year, everyone. Read on!

Think that it only can get better. Not totally true, but still. :D

Lol don't get used to it!

I started Blood Bound today. I think I can fit it into the Yearly Challenge in a couple of places. Wanted something light and fluffy for my recovery.

message 12: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am starting The Muse

message 13: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4513 comments I was planning on taking down Christmas today, but it's cold and rainy so I started When I Married My Mother for the "All About Me" challenge and am going to snuggle in for the day.

message 14: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2097 comments I started White Fire today, really enjoying it. I will use it for the yearly challenge (vanilla). I also listened for a while to Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, but I don't understand the high ratings it's been getting. The MC is a thoroughly unlikeable person.

I started Truly Madly Guilty since I bought it during one of the recent sales and it fits the relationship status category for the challenge. Hoping it is a better story than Three Wishes, which I didn't really like much.

I'm intrigued by that book. I really liked [book:Big Little Lies
by the same author.

Sarah | 18549 comments With being ill i don't seem to be able to pay attention to what im reading. I am slowly working my way through The Hero of Ages. It might take longer than the previous two at this rate.

message 18: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments I really liked Big Little Lies too, Sarah. That's my favorite by Moriarty so far. I hope to read Truly Madly Guilty soon.

I am still reading Heartless and Small Great Things. I had hoped to finish them both yesterday, but didn't feel too well and didn't get around to them. Next up for me is The Girl Who Drank the Moon and The Woman in Cabin 10.

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments Oops! I got carried away with myself. I can't start Snow Crash today. The buddy read doesn't start until Jan 9th.

Instead, I will start Pride and Prejudice which is my monthly challenge choice.

message 21: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm hoping to finish Auld Acquaintance today and hope to start one of my books for the 2017 challenge! Not sure which one I will start yet :)

message 23: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I finished the short story, Mitosis. I also started my monthly challenge read, Pride and Prejudice.

message 24: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I finished Pride and Prejudice which was my monthly read and crossed off one of the left-over challenge books.

Next up is Ceremony in Death. I have to read so that the next book in the series will count for the survey challenge.

message 25: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I just finished Ellie's Story by W. Bruce Cameron for one of the survey questions for the 2017 year challenge! Such a cute and short book! (Sorry can't link since I'm on the app). Seriously when are they going to make it so we can link books on the app? Ha!
Anywho, the book is told from the dog's perspective. Ellie is a German shepherd and is a K9 search and rescue dog. There were sad tears and happy tears and such a sweet story and every dog lover will love it. Not too hard of a read..easily can read it in a day or two which I did ;-)

message 26: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments Ellie's Story

Sounds like a touching read, Stephanie.

message 27: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Thank you for the link, Janice! I absolutely loved this book <3

message 28: by Joan (new)

Joan "Men often hate each other because they fear each other;
they fear each other because they do not know each other;
they do not know each other because they cannot communicate;
they cannot communicate because they are separated."

From "Stride Toward Freedom" which I am reading for the January challenge.
Seems this was true in 1954 & is still true today.

**I'll fix the link tomorrow (bet you've read that before!)

message 29: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't know what to read now. I went on a harry Bosch bender reading #7-13 in the series this week. I believe I need a break from mysteries I think. I love the series but time to put on hold for now. I'll just link one of them A Darkness More Than Night which was a 5 star for me

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I agree that it's tricky to know what to read when you've read a series of books in the same genre (or even same series). I reckon I'll finish my current book The Hero of Ages today which is the last book in the trilogy. I've read all 3 back to back so I've spent a lot of time in that world recently. I know I need a change. But I'm not sure what kind of change. Don't get me wrong, I've loved every minute of being in that world, but I think I need something with no magic system, fewer characters, and a simple world.

You are right, Joan. Thanks for sharing.

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I finished The Hero of Ages which was a great conclusion to the trilogy. I've decided to go for a short novella The Monarch of the Glen, part of the American Gods series. I wanted something short as i have a buddy read for Snow Crash coming up in a couple days.

message 34: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments I'm still reading Small Great Things and plan to finish today. So far, it's been really good. I'm not a fan of court room drama, so I'm hoping it doesn't take a dip here.

I'm also reading Heartless, which has been good, though I have an issue with the main character being a pushover at the moment.

I've also started The Girl Who Drank the Moon for the monthly read and I'm finding it entertaining. It is children's / middle grade, so the writing is simple and the good and bad guys are pretty clear, but the story is interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. I think it will be a fairly quick read for anyone that wants to join.

Lastly, I'm reading Your Cholesterol Matters: What Your Numbers Mean and How You Can Improve Them as a NetGalley review. A lot of what he has said has been interesting, but he is starting to get repetitive and I think the changes he wants people to make would be a lot to change all at once.

message 35: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I decided to go with complete humor and fluff. Master of Formalities

message 36: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie @Tasha! Yay! I hope you love it too! I look forward to your thoughts on it :)

message 37: by Joan (new)

Joan I'm having a hard time focusing on anything right now...everything seems soo bleak. I tried a fluffy mystery, a nineteenth-century classic, and a historical book for the Challenge - I just can't muster interest in anything...grr, frustrated.

Joan, maybe try rereading a book you previously enjoyed. I find that often helps to get me reading again when nothing else is working.

message 39: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Joan, humorous books or page turner mysteries is what I chose when I am in that state. Sometimes I need a break, so I do something else for a couple of days, like knitting, gardening (not the season right no, I know), or an on line course in futurelearn. After a few days I start missing a good book, and in general I am more focused when I try again.

message 40: by Lisa (last edited Jan 07, 2017 08:56AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished my first book of the year, The Muse, which was a yearly challenge book and also a buddy read. I enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars. I didn't think it was quite as good as her previous book, The Miniaturist, and I did have a few problems with it but it was still immensely enjoyable and a book I would highly recommend.

Next up for me is Thin Air which is another book for the yearly challenge.

message 41: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments I finished my first book of the year too, Small Great Things. I thought it was excellent. There were just a couple of things that I felt didn't quite fit right in the second half, but overall the writing was excellent and the story was engaging. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Yeah! I hope you enjoy Death of Dulgath. You've been waiting long enough to read it.

message 45: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm pretty sure I will! Although I'm sometimes afraid that at one point the magic will be gone and it will leave me disappointed. I think I rated all Riyria books 5 stars so far.

message 46: by Joan (new)

Joan Yay I finished Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story before Martin Luther King Day on January 16.

I gave it five stars because it is an important but not easy book to read. In this memoir of the amazingly successful Montgomery Bus Boycott, MLK makes a strong case for non-violence and Christian love. I had only a vague idea about the civil-rights era and had never read any of MLK's work - I had not appreciated his dedication to Christianity and love for people.
I am cynical about Modern Christian leaders because they seem so, well, insincere and materialistic, MLK seems to be a true believer who dreamed of a better USA and world, for everyone not just a secure bank balance and flashier church for himself.

I'm not much of a nonfiction reader so I've never really thought about reading one of MLK's books. I just added this one to my TBR though, it sounds very interesting!

message 49: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I was readingThe Problem with Forever for the Survey-Ch. I finished it, but it wasn't good at all (the characters were unlikely and artificial, I can put up with many things, but not with that) .
On to greener pastures. I'll be reading Rubinrot, also for the Survey (in 5,4,3,2,1...)

message 50: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I finished Ceremony in Death which I discovered I could slot into my Survey Challenge. Woot!

Tomorrow, I will start Snow Crash. It's a buddy read and will also fit my Survey Challenge.
