What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I'm not quite sure if I'm remembering two different novels, but I'm 60% sure it's the same book...I read this book a year ago on an ereader.

The story begins with the Heroine mistaken as the Hero's tryst for the night at a masquerade/costume party. The Heroine is dressed as Ariadne, her telling clue being the ball that she carries, but subsequently loses during the night. The Hero, drawn to the woman, tries to find her. They're at a house party, so he investigates his prospects throughout the following days.

Some things to note:
The Heroine has a misshapen/clawed hand. She is good at chess. The chapters start off with funny quotes from her deceased father.
