ok, so i dont know if this counts as a twilight topic, but then again i am talking about it so...

What I wanna know though, is why everyone is so crazy for twilight?

i read the book and I'll admit I liked it, but in the end I was full of disappiontment. Disatisfied with Meyer's idea of a vampire. I do give her credit for creating her own vampire, but I just don't like the fact that they sparkle and don't have fangs. They don't live up to the original vampire like Dracula. I honestly do not think of them as vampires anymore. More like an overly sensitive, sparkly human who likes to drink animal blood.

Agree or disagree with me I really don't really care I was just expressing myself.

I fully agree with you.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Marina go check out Sookie Stackhouse book/show group. Most people in that group hate Twilight. I am in both groups. There both cool. But you wont hear a word about Twilight over there. Except how bad the Twilight series is.

Mina Time Lord (thewanderer) | 35 comments Well, that's funny. It's sort of how I feel Marina. I read and, believe it or not, enjoyed the first book. However at the end I felt no desire to read the others. I thought it was entertaining, but not in any way exceptional. Just entertaining. It killed a good broken four to six hours. Honestly what I tel people about them is, if you think you'll like them, read 'em. Don't read them because everyone else does.

message 6: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I never liked Twilight. When I was half way through the book. I thought to myself, how did I get duped into reading this. The New York Times best seller list. What do those squared know?

message 7: by April (new)

April Larsen Camacho | 7 comments Yup and honestly, I only really liked Twilight. The only reason I really liked the last three was because of Jacob and his gang on shape shifters!

message 8: by Leannear24 (new)

Leannear24 i liked it coz its different

message 9: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments It was way to different. At least in series books like Sookie Stackhouse aka Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Hariss. They retain their evil Nature to great extent. Most of them are extremely evil in Charlaines books. But they are also capable of being very nice. Read the first book in that series Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. You will stop reading all the vampires in high school books imediately. Sookie Stackhouse has Vampires, Shifters, mytologicial creatures, daemons, witches, goblins, humanoids from other dimensions, and faries who really more remind me of the elves in Lord of the Rings.

message 10: by April (new)

April Larsen Camacho | 7 comments wow! I never knew Harris worked all of those creatures into her books! Ima have to read them :)

message 11: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Oh yeah Sookie Stackhouse has a whole universe of supernatural beings and reminds me of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which I am sure had a big influence on Charlaine Harris. Her books being so radicaly different from all the other series books out there.

I think Meyer stole some concepts from Buffy. She tried to make them her own, but she just made a horrible mess of it. For instance the forbidden relationship between Buffy and Angel... I don't know how to properly explain what I mean but if you've seen Buffy you'll understand.

message 13: by Cary (last edited Aug 31, 2009 05:41AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I think Charlaine Harris borrowed plenty of her ideas of Buffy herself.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe she did as well but like I said, Meyer made a mess of it. But Harris made it her own without making it repulsive to read/watch.

message 15: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah I would agree with that. Meyer made a mess of it for sure, and Harriss made a great interesting new universe of cool beings. I just love Sookie Stackhouse books and TrueBlood. Can't wait for the next book and cant wait for the next episode of TrueBlood. :)

message 16: by Julia (new)

Julia B (juliayb) i hate vampires that can't die. well, i mean they're already dead, but something about vampires that reform if they're chopped into pieces, and can only be cut by vampire and werewolf teeth, and SPARKLE, not burn up in the sun, well it really pisses me off.

message 17: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments In the oldest of the Gothic vampire tales vampires do not burn in the sun. John Polodoris The Vampyre with Lords Ruthven,Dracula,Camilla,Varney the Vampire. All off them could walk in the day. They just fed at night. Dracula lost his magic powers during the day. So being a smart 500 year old vampire he only came out at night. In the one point in Dracula he has to come out in the day to check on his dirt boxes. He runs into Lord Godalming, and Quincy Morriss who almost kills Dracula with his Bowie Knife. But Dracula jumps out the window and runs. It is not until movies. Like Nosferatu were the vampire goes out in a puff of smoke at sunrise that vampires burn in the sun. Cinema audtiences loved the special effects. So in Movies and on TV vampires have been burning ever since. :(

Randi | 3 comments When i first read the Twilight series i liked it but after it had been out and the movie came out,and i had read other books with vampires in it i realized how much i disliked Twilight.I think its stupid how Bella is so desperate to be with Edward and how helpless she is...i also agree with whoever said that its stupid how they sparkle,i mean arent vampires supposed to be fierce and tough? Then they Sparkle????

message 21: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments First of all let me begin by saying Twilight sucks. I always thought it sucked. What vampires are supposed to be is ghostly & demonic. Beings of magic & creatures of darkness.

Karen Dales (karendalesauthor) | 4 comments When I was a Special Guest at FanExpo2009 many of the folks who came by picked up my book and asked me if it was like Twilight. My staff and I would always say no. That it was written for adults by an adult and that the vampires in my novel have bite and do not sparkle. Everyone (except one) looked heavenward and thanked their particular deities. It was such an interesting way of taking a poll about the Twilight series.

When I was on the 'Vampires in Fact and Fiction' with Elizabeth Miller, Nancy Kilpatrick and Kelley Armstrong, there was not one Twilight fan amongst the 650 people seated. Oh sure there was one question about Twilight, but it was treated with 'oh...that's nice dear' and we moved on.

Sorry, vampires are NOT daylight disco balls, and a vegetarian eats plants, not animals. Oh...and the laws of physics do rule Vampires too...especially when driving fast on a winding rode slick with rain.

Cheers!

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I wish somebody would write a story in the tradition of Dracula, Carmilla, or The Vampyre. A single book with allot of thought put into it. At this time no one is writing stand alone vampire stories. It could be because of the blend of Vampire stories and Romance movels have become so financially sucessful. Where have all the real vampires gone. Vampires that don't burn in the sun,and don't need no stinking invitations to come on in. I know that the burning in the sun is a film or Hollywood creation. I wonder how, and where in vampire mythos it states that vampires need an invitation. I have certainly never seen it in Gothic writings. So I am figuring it too is a Hollywood creation.

It's interesting that you point out about vampires going out in the sun. When I was on the Vampires in Fact and Fiction panel with Dr. Elizabeth Miller, Canada's foremost scholar on Dracula and vampires, she stated that in Bram Stoker's book Dracula went out in the daylight (reduced powers) 9 times.

I don't know when the idea of needing an invite to cross the door came into effect. As for burning with the sun...that came about with Nosferatu, but may have it's roots earlier.

As for a stand alone vampire novel, there are some around, one just has to search for them. If you want a vampire story that isn't purely paranormal romance, mine is mainly a murder mystery with the vampires in trouble. You should also check out Nancy Kilpatrick's books...they are great and most likely what you are searching for as well.

Cheers

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Van Helsings states that Dracula had the physical power of 20 men. So if his powers are reduced 9 times. Golly Gee he was only as strong as 10 men in daylight. However what it really says in Dracula is that during the day Dracula lost all his magic powers. But could still move around in the light if the situation demanded it. Carmilla still retained physical powers in the light. Matter of fact she was a regular day light person. John Polodori in "The Vampyre" also has Lord Ruthven active in the daylight. He never attributes Lord Ruthven with having any powers beyond immortality, and the ability to resurect himself by the light of the moon when he is killed. When I read Vampire stories I am not looking for paranormal romance, or mystery. Just a great Gothic vampire story with a wicked vampire. The mystery lies in the vampire himself. How could such a being exist? Sookie Stackhouse and Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV version. Are the only modern serial vampire tales I like. If I wanted to read vampire serial stories. I would read Varney the Vampire aka Feast of Blood. There is a short excerpt online called "The Resurection of a Vampire" that just rocks.

I think Anne Rice's novels could stand alone they aren't exactly classic Gothic but close enough and pretty bad ass. I also really enjoyed Steven Savile's Vampire Wars, again not exactly classic Gothic but very good.

They are both series but very good ones. No sparkling, no "vegetarian" vampires, and no invites necessary.

you have a very good point. i kinda feel bad for liking to read those vampire romance novels... people ruined vampires.

message 28: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah what can you say? Vampires are just not what they used to be. At least their are still vampire shows. I can remember back in the late 60's when the afternoon soap opera "Dark Shadows was the only vampire show on TV. Now we have had Buffy which ran a long time, and really opened the door for the return of vampires to popular culture. After Buffy was Angel, Moonlight. Both of which didn't last long. Matter of fact Angels best season was it's last when they brought over some of the characters from Buffy. Like Spike,& Harmony. Angels last season like Buffys was it's best. After Moonlight was cancelled it was quickly replaced with TrueBlood and now the are the Vampire Diaries, and all kinds of Vampire movies. There were stage plays of Dracula that came out in the 70's and again in the 80's. Probably there is a stage play of Dracula someplace right now. However no one had written a real Vampyre stand alone masterpiece. A book that real has such depth and interest it can't be followed by sequals. Like Dracula or Carmilla. They couldn't have sequals to great stories like that. Dracula, and Carmilla died. That's what I am waiting for. Those stories may be out of popularity now, and lost to the past. Replaced by Paranormal Romance. But the old school Gothic vampire stories of the 1800's will always be my personal favorites. :)

i agree with you once more. There can never be another Dracula or Carmilla. By the way, I'm reading Dracula, it's so what I've been craving for. Dark and suspenseful.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments The first time I read Dracula I was amazed. I thought it would be just a simple horror story like those Bella Lagosi movies. When I reaized it was classic litterature with a whole lot of depth, plot, and theme put into it I was hooked. Carmilla was the first vampire story I read when I was 14 however that really got me into vampires. Both Braum Stoker and Seridan Le Fanu had read Augustine Calmets Phantom World with its accounts of the vammpires of Romania & Transylvannia. So there is research, and study of the oldest Gothic vampire tradition in the writing of those books. Now in the new Paranormal Romance books. The soure for vampire inspiration. Is not from old books. But from Hollywood films. :)

i finished Dracula!!!!
its very suspensful. im obsessed with Dracula now. I read somewhere that Stroker was planning to write a sequel. not sure if its true though.

message 34: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments LOL Braum Stoker would have to be a Vampire himself to write another sequal to Dracula. He published Dracula circa 1897. He has been dead about 100 years or more. But yeah Dracula is freaking the best. I just reread it for the 10th time. I love the part where he is holding Jonathan prisoner in the Castle. Now read Carmilla it was writtin in 1877, and inspired Dracula allot. Just type in Carmilla on your browzer. Its free on line. Sheridan LeFanu is great. Both writers are from Dublin and both read Augutine Calmnets Phantom World, and the Magia Posthuma. Varney the Vampire, Resurection of a Vampire is online to and rocks.

I love that part. It makes me claustrophobic though. That's some good story telling...
I'll remember to check those out.
Thanks.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments How very intresting. However most people who try to emmulate their father suck. Look at Bob Dylans son or Julian Lennon, Arlo Guthrie. They all tried to be guitar players and song writers like their fathers and where just awful. There is no telling however. I would kinda scim through it before I bought it. I have read other books that are take offs on Dracula. One was by a woman and the whole story was told from Minas perspective. Lord god almighty it was lame. Dracula is just plain unique. There is not one piece of dialogue between characters. It is all a series of correspondences. Letters, diary entries, news paper articles, and messages. There is no dialogue FTF in the whole book. : )

message 41: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well that's interesting however you know what would be a gazzillion times better, and would have made the Stoker family allot more money? To have taken Braum's original hand written notes ans sketches and published them in a book for people to read. Dracula was never meant to be a sequal story. Dracula died. His throat was cut with an Afghan kukuri knife and he was stabbed to the heart with a Bowie Knife by the Texan Quincy. Then Dracula was beheaded and burned. How you gonna ressurect that, LOL. It may be a fun book to read because I like anything classic vampire. But as I said. I would rather read Braums old notes myself, and I find it rather curious that they have never been published before. : )

Jeni (jenibouu) | 1 comments I liked twilight, but eventually I realized it wasnt all that great. There was nothing special in her writing, and nothing EXTREMELY captivating in her scenarios. About Bella and Edwards "forbidden" relationship...who exactly forbid it? If he was evil, and couldn't do anything in the sunlight then that makes sense. After all, that is the thing that pretty much seperates vampires from humans; they're complete evilness, and their lack of conscience, lack of life... Meyer totally destroyed the whole vampire theme. vampires shoud: have fangs, not be able to go to places of God, drink HUMAN blood, use compulsion or hypnotism, have super strength, sleep in a coffin, burn in sunlight...NONE of this happened in twilight except the OCCASIONAL human meal, not done by members of the Cullen Coven however...It rilly destroyed the whole vampire theme...the only quality they left completely the same was living forever...but yeah...it wasnt that good...

I feel the same. I love the original vampire better. The one bram stoker created; the ones from myth.

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1 comments Wow I never thought of it that way. And it does seems like a modern fantasy vampire Romeo and Juliet story. But I do love this book so much cause when I read this book it makes me feel well...happy cause I can not think about my complicated life. And these books (the twilight saga) helps me to get out from reality for a while and stay in my fantasy world. SO OUT OF TOPIC

So to me they are not vampires but I do appreciate Meyer's creativity about these vampires.

message 45: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Hey everyone should read what they like. I think you would like Sookie Stackhouse way better than Twilight. It is easilly the best of the Romance vampire books. I like the old stories like Carmilla, and Dracula, and the Gothic Vampire short stories. Because I grew up on vampires being magic, occult, and ultimately evil. Scientific explanations for them and love stories just kind of kill it for me in most cases. Both Carmilla and Dracula are love stories. But they are much more subtle and the Romance is not the main theme of the book. A vampire that cant dematerialize, and shape shift. What kind of vampire is that? Vampires that play baseball. That totally shot it down for me,LOL.

message 46: by Ellice (new)

Ellice (satanlovesme) kinda agree cuz they should have fangs and sparkling vamps? plz they should hate the light but yeah i probly couldn't make a good vamp book so wat the heck

message 47: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I bet you could. You should try for fun. I have thought about writting a single vampire story. With ancient ruins and casltles. From which the vampire emerges into the present day. Magic and evil, and is not destroyed but driven away into the shadows. Just one single book with allot of thought. No series books. Just one great well thought out story.
