⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) ※The Hobby Corner Monthly Challenge※

descriptiondescription

You never know where an idea for a challenge can come from...and this one is no exception! A conversation with my husband led to this little challenge: A feature on a specific hobby every month!

For March, I'm featuring an indoors hobby that can create beautiful images of Spring: Cross Stitching!

There are three different ways to participate in this challenge: do a spell out of any of the words I'll list below, complete a number of tasks that correspond to a level, or mix and match to meet that level goal!

How To’s:
• Pick your level
• Read one book per task/letter
• Spell outs can be completed using Title, Author First and/or Last Name, Narrator First and/or Last Name, or Series Name ONLY!
Articles and other words such as 'A', 'And', 'An', and 'The' do not count to match to a letter in the spell outs!
• Re-reads are allowed
• There are no page minimums or limits unless noted

Duration: March 1st to March 31st, 2017

Levels:
Counted: 4 or less books
Tiled: 5-7 books
Uniform: 8-10 books
Multi-Colored: 11+ books

Spell Outs
Counted ◈ X-Shaped* ◈ Floss ◈ Needle ◈ Aida Cloth ◈ Evenweave ◈ Stamped ◈ Raster ◈ Cross-Country* ◈ Parked ◈ Backstitch ◈ Scissors ◈ Long-Armed*

*The dash mark (-) is ignored for purposes of the spell out.

Tasks
Cross-stitch is the oldest form of embroidery and can be found all over the world.: Read a book set in country that is not the one you live in
The cross stitch sampler is called that because it was generally stitched by a young girl to learn how to stitch.: Read a Young Adult Book
Traditionally, cross-stitch was used to embellish items like household linens, tablecloths, dishcloths, and doilies.: Read a book where a character works in the party planning/catering business, or where a character works from home
It is now increasingly popular to work the pattern on pieces of fabric and hang them on the wall for decoration.: Read a book where a character has to decorate a space (home, church, room, etc)
Besides designs created expressly for cross stitch, there are software programs that convert a photograph or a fine art image into a chart suitable for stitching.: Read a book where someone has to use computers or a computer program
There are many cross-stitching "guilds" and groups across the United States and Europe which offer classes, collaborate on large projects, stitch for charity, and provide other ways for local cross-stitchers to get to know one another.: Read a book where someone does charitible work, or where a group of people gather for a specific task
Today cotton floss is the most common embroidery thread. While there are other manufacturers, the two most-commonly used (and oldest) brands are DMC and Anchor, both of which have been manufacturing embroidery floss since the 1800s.: Read a book set in the 1800s
Cotton Floss is a thread made of mercerized cotton, composed of six strands that are only loosely twisted together and easily separable.: Read the sixth book in a series, a book with the number 6 on the cover, or a standalone book of any size
Cross stitch is widely used in traditional Palestinian dressmaking.: Read a book with a character that makes a dress, or is set in Palestine/Israel
The Great Recession has also seen renewal of interest in home crafts. The "make do and mend" mentality of the credit crisis has driven people to make their own cards and gifts.: Read a book where a character is in debt to someone or where someone gives a homemade gift

If you have questions about the challenge, feel free to ask!

Also, if you have a hobby you'd like to see featured over the next year, send me a PM! I do still have a couple of slots open in the 2017 schedule!

Yes, "and" is not an article, but I don't want it used to count for an 'A' in spell outs either, and as challenge author, that is well within my prerogative. I will adjust the wording to better reflect this, but this challenge has been up for 3 months now, and this kind of thing is rather nitpicky.
