Ever since she was child, Jem has kept a secret: Whenever she meets someone new, no matter who, as soon as she looks into their eyes, a number pops into her head. That number is a date: the date they will die. Burdened with such awful awareness, Jem avoids relationships. Until she meets Spider, another outsider, and takes a chance. The two plan a trip to the city. But while waiting to ride the Eye ferris wheel, Jem is terrified to see that all the other tourists in line flash the same number. Today's number. Today's date. Terrorists are going to attack London. Jem's world is about to explode!

(view spoiler)[ I get that Jem got in trouble and then ran away right before the bomb but I'm still a little confused as to why they decided they needed to flee? And Val just lets them go, no questions asked!? (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 20
(view spoiler)[ I still don't think enough is happening in this plot. They are running and that's basically it. & why is Spider so thin? Is he sick? (hide spoiler)]

If it wasn't for the whole cool thing with the numbers I would have rated this much lower. But it's unique and cool.

Review: (view spoiler)[The preview of the next book really turned me off from reading it. I was hoping for more of Jem but instead it's about her son and some other girl. Plus there's that thing with her father. :(

I was really saddened by Jem's life. Her mother dying and on top of that being a drug addict. Her father not in the picture. No relatives. Constantly moving from foster home to foster home. No friends. Pregnant at 15/16. Dying in her early twenties. On top of that knowing when everyone she knows is going to die!

I was also saddened that her foster mother who is probably on of only 3 people who ever gave a shit about her suffered before she died. And that Jem had to help take care of her and also take care of her young son. She had one of the worse life's I've ever read about in a YA book and that's saying something. Still she was loved by someone before she died and that is something not everyone gets. :/ (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-7

(view spoiler)[Not sure how I feel about this book so far. I don't like main characters who basically don't want to try with other people and are a bit moody and so bloody annoying. And this main character is exactly that.

Like when she is arrested for bringing a knife to school and she thinks this is a reasonable thing to do and she's kissed off at everyone else because she was arrested for it. What? No, it was a stupid thing to do. Not sure if I'll continue with this one. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 1-5 (view spoiler)[ how messed up is that, she knew when her mom was going to die!!! Spider seems like he might have a touch of ADD. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 6 -12 (view spoiler)[ aww poor grandpa... I feel Jem though, I would be freaked out too. I wonder I feel she could have done anything to stop it. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 13-25 (view spoiler)[ crap, that got spider... and he only has three days left. I really want her to be able to change the date. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 8-11

(view spoiler)[I'm guessing they're not gonna get very far in a stolen car. Especially as they're on the run from police after being suspected of setting off the bomb in London and the car they're in belongs to their teacher.

Also, mild annoyance: this book is set in London and full of British slang, but the dates aren't correct for the UK. In the UK, the date is written as day-month-year but the author has it written as month-day-year. I don't know if this was a conscious decision by the author so an American audience would understand it better but it's kind of annoying haha. Especially as the author's going to such lengths to include as much British slang as possible. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 12-26

Book Finished

(view spoiler)[What a bit of a sad ending. I was willing for there to be some way that Spider would survive and they would run off into the sunset together. Nope. Heart broken.

I did think that maybe Jem would be pregnant with his baby though and turns out I was right.

I don't think I'll read the other books in the series because I wasn't that keen on this one. (hide spoiler)]
