Do you look up music that is mentioned in the books you read? YouTube makes it so easy to do so, which presents a great opportunity to appreciate the character/author's mindset.

Additional Question 1: Have you met any great pieces of music this way?

Additional Question 2: Do you have special music that you listen to while you read? If yes, Does certain music lend itself to certain genres for you?

I don't listen to music while I read (distracting!) but usually look up music on YouTube when it's mentioned in a book. I find it takes my understanding of characters and themes to a deeper level.

I listened to the Goldberg Variations while reading The Goldbug Variations. Though normally I'm like Tracy and I find music too distracting while reading, particularly if there are lyrics.

I'm often listening to audiobooks which means my ears are occupied, but I have looked up the occasional piece of music. Haruki Murakami has lead me too some wonderful classical and jazz music. Also, Patrick O'Brian.

Yes Rachmanioff's Vespers. Can't remember the novel though.

The Moonlight Sonata after the Mapp and Lucia books.

And wasn't the Moonlight Sonata also the one they danced to in I Capture the Castle? I did look that one up, but that was many years ago. I don't remember otherwise doing it.

I can't listen to music while I read, or indeed while I do anything but listen to music, because I was trained as a musician to actually listen to music, close listening as it were (equivalent to close reading?), so it occupies all my attention. And yes, background music in stores and elevators does bug me, though I've learned to tune it out because it's not music I've chosen to play.

I don't remember it in I Capture the Castle but it's been a while since I read it- but I do remember I first looked it up after Lucia. There were others in the Lucia books that I looked up- once she goes to London and suddenly her tastes become more "modern" and "fashionable".

I can't listen when I read either- I prefer silence (or as close to silence as I can have).

I've never listened to a piece of music mentioned in a book, but I did listen to the playlist that Deborah Harkness put together for when she wrote A Discovery of Witches. And from that playlist I discovered two of my now favourite artists.
