But the suggestion reminded me that the first retelling I ever knew was an Alice story--a vintage novel called Alice in Orchestralia. It starts when a girl named Alice steps into the bell of a tuba. . . .
As a child I thought it surprising and clever to set all the Wonderland episodes in the framework of the classical orchestra. It whetted a taste for retellings that will no doubt last my whole life.
We could read Heartless but I don't know if we could count it as an Alice retelling.
