STEEL HEART is an international research and espionage organization. It was founded with the knowledge that partially-mechanical super soldiers were being engineered as part of the new colonization movement. The name itself was meant to represent the resilience with which the unethical and immoral technology would be fought. Founder Alzbeta Berstein knew everything that was being hidden — after all, she was the one leading the project.

The initial project included the modification of various humans — prisoners of war, inmates sentenced to death row, the deceased who had left their bodies to science. Modifications included limbs, lungs, hearts, guts — but, most importantly, brains. If you were to be able to program a brain with certain information, what couldn't you do?

Are these experiments ethical? Of course not. Which is why Berstein left.

Not without a price on her head, of course; what goes around comes around, and Berstein disappeared without a trace — but the whereabouts of her Steel Heart Project were a secret she would, and did, take to her grave.

Now, the Steel Heart Project continues on under the leadership of Berstein's designated successor. The organization recruits internationally, primarily individuals between the ages of eighteen and thirty (with some exceptions) for their physical health. Those with the organization are trained according to what they will be assigned to — reconnaissance, combat, coding, hacking, etc.

There are some cyborgs within the company, thanks to the information that Alzbeta Berstein brought with her when she founded the Steel Heart Project. It is the Steel Heart Project's policy that modifications are only made where necessary (i.e., more so as prosthetics and transplants than anything else) with no work on the brain.

But then again... everyone has something to hide.
