You are so lucky Rachel to be able to read them all together. I read Daughter of Smoke & Bone before Days of Blood & Starlight had come out and had to wait a year in suspense! I felt the same way after reading Days of Blood and Starlight.
I agree with you that it is not really typical YA, rather it is ageless. It is a story where the leading character just happens to be an older teen.
I would go so far to say that the real message in this series is anti-war.

This is the second time Rachel has deleted all her comments leaving me looking like I am having a one-sided conversation! She was the one who wanted to start up this thread. I think I might just delete it now! Too bad because I am finally getting to the third book Of God and Monsters.

Looks like she left the group entirely.

Nothing wrong with a good one-sided conversation! :)

Marina Finlayson | 7 comments Definitely the best way to get the last word in! (and the first, and the second, etc, etc).

I read the first two one after the other, but I'm still waiting to read the last one, as the larger-size paperbacks won't fit in my book shelves, so I try very hard to resist buying them.

I also thought they weren't particularly Young Adulty, just stories that happened to feature a younger protagonist. And great stories, too. Among many other things I liked about them, I loved the way she brought Prague to life. I don't think I've ever read a book set there before.

Thanks everyone for joining in and not making me seem like I'm just talking to myself! So I guess I don't need to delete the thread!

After waiting a few months for my library copy of Dreams of Gods & Monsters I had to put it aside. It's been almost 2 years since I read Days of Blood & Starlight and I'd forgotten too much to make it enjoyable. There were a few side characters and things that had happened that I no longer remember, so I am looking forward to first re-reading that one before going on to the third book.

It's really a series that's best to read straight through.

Leah (flying_monkeys) | 1009 comments Jalilah,

After you mentioned this in the Currently Reading thread, then started up this separate thread, I decided to give the series a go. I am so glad I did! I started Daughter of Smoke & Bone last night and had to force myself to stop in order to sleep. As soon as I could this morning I picked it up and read it straight through to the end. I am not one for romance, or the whole fated lovers thing, but I still really enjoyed the mythic feel, and the anti-war message. I'm excited to pick up the second book to see where this will go next.

So definitely a big thank you for sharing how much you enjoyed this series. If you hadn't, I probably would've skipped over it thinking it'd be just another one of those YA books.

So glad you are enjoying it Leah! I look forward to reading your impressions of the next two books! The seeming fated lovers thing is only in the first book.

That is exactly what happened to me. Only I started the series before it was finished and had to wait for the next books each time.

It's a tough decision: do we read them as they're written, along with other rabid readers, getting to feed off that anticipation and excitement of the newly released sequel? Or do we delay that gratification in order to binge read the entire series at once, which is in itself instant gratification just delayed a couple years? A fun conundrum. ;)

Marina Finlayson | 7 comments The other good thing about waiting is that if there's a horrific cliffhanger in one of the earlier books, you don't have to scream and throw it across the room. You just go get the next one off the shelf!

Leah (flying_monkeys) | 1009 comments Well, I finished Days of Blood & Starlight. Here's my review. For some reason Karou really got under my skin. But I'm still excited to read the third book.
