As the sole survivor of a plane crash, you've been stranded on a deserted island. As luck would have it, you happen to have a survival book in your luggage along with your favorite religious/inspirational/philosophical tome. But even luckier, you also have in your possession the one book you wouldn't mind reading over and over again. What is this book?

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende The Neverending Story by Michael Ende

If you have a book that hypothetically contains all other books, then you are good to go ;)

Darn good story too.

Robert Italia (robert-italia) | 132 comments Doubt I'd be all that happy about being stranded on a deserted island. If it were tolerable, and I felt comfortable enough to spend time reading fiction, probably The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Something to take me away from my isolation.

Tom Mathews | 119 comments Mine would have to be the Decameron by Boccaccio. I have read it off and on ever since my mom introduced me to it over 40 years ago. It's perfect for the occasion as it is the story of ten people entertaining themselves by telling stories while hiding out from the plague in an Italian villa.

Mine is actually Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin Winter's Tale which has a large number of tales within. Strangely, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the movie version yet. The previews promise disappointment.

Santiago (marthis) | 4 comments Not sure but I think The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings Trilogy would be good choices, or the Song of Fire and Ice saga

I haven't been able to think of one! This was actually one of the essay questions I answered for one of my college applications, back in the day ;-). But, my answer then Atlas Shrugged, and some other book that I no longer remember the name of (you could bring two books), no longer applies. I've read the book 4 times, I'm not sure I'd want to read it again.

Haven't come up with another yet. Hmmmmm.

Maybe The Secret Garden :). I read it twice so far this year, loved it both times.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'd have to go with LotR, or maybe annotated Shakespeare's complete. I've read enough of both to know that, given nothing else to pass the time with, I could enjoy them - but I've not read them through yet because of having access to so many other, shorter, books.

Garrett Smith (garrettsmith) | 246 comments Okay, so according to the premise established above, I have my Bible and a survival book. Assuming my survival book includes recipes for palm frond soup and large spider with small bird stew, well, then I just need pure escapism. Clearly, my choice is Best-Loved Folktales of the World Best-Loved Folktales of the World by Joanna Cole selected and introduced by Joanna Cole. These ancient stories have survived for a reason.

Of course, I'll also need pen and paper so I can write my own autobiography, which I would title, 'How To Decorate Your Lean-to Hut During The Monsoon Season' or 'Always Bring A Friend'.
