Just finished The Caped Crusade by Glen Weldon ( a whole lotta Batman), Rush OH! by Shirley Barrett (a turn of the last century Australian whaling tale), Anne Bishop's Etched in Bone (the fifth in her The Others series), and Tanya Huff's A Peace Divided (the second in her spinoff of her Valor series).
I've been on hiatus from Lit Lineup books while reading a few for book club, for combining nature & kids, and catching up on those my 8 year old book worm's had her nose buried in. Whew! :-) But, I checked out a couple Lit Lineup books from the library a couple days ago, and see that one is on the loner list: Version Control. Maybe I'll get it read and one more can move off that list. Happy reading!
Like others, I have been away from the Lit Lineup selections, but I hope to change that soon. I finished May by reading A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley, and Wild in the Hollow: On Chasing Desire and Finding the Broken Way Home by Amber C. Haines. Recommendations for Smiley's book, but not so much on Wild in the Hollow. I was alternately enthralled and disappointed by this book. I started June with listening to both The Nix, by Nathan Hill, and Britt-Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman. For a breather, I read Hunter's Moon by Dana Stabenow. I am currently reading What We're Fighting for Now is Each Other by Wen Stephenson. This is a book on climate change, and I find it most distressing. I am also listening to Mischling by Affinity Konar. Folks in my book club tell me that there are moments of hope and grace. I am about half-way through and finding it most difficult. It gives me nightmares. I am looking forward to getting these books finished and looking for something more upbeat.
I also had been on a Lit lineup reading break but did manage to finish two books this last month, Pax, by Sara Pennypacker and Black Ice, White Sky by Stan Jones. Enjoyed both. But I also started and did not finish Mink River by Brian Doyle. I thought I was going to love this book. It takes place in Oregon. I love Oregon. The author is apparently friends with David James Duncan, whose work I love. Mr. Duncan even had an excerpt of a glowing review for Mink River on the cover. I found the characters, the town and the stories intriguing but I hated the author's writing style so much I gave up on it. I kept getting completely lost in the long lists of random nouns, adverbs, nonsense word, whatever stuck in the midst of what should have been the story. I am sure he had a plan but I did not like it, read my 50 pages and firmly decided it is not for me. This is a first for me with your reading lists. I have discovered many new gems and old favorites up to this point. I would love to hear if others liked this book
I just finished The Humans by Matt Haig and I loved it. It was different from everything else I have read this summer, but in a very good way.
The Homer Public Library has been a hopping place lately and with all the busyness I haven't been posting here as much as I'd hoped to.
What are you reading? Any suggestions for great summer reads?
I'm currently listening to "A Gentleman in Moscow" and am enjoying it quite a lot. It's also an interesting take on the Russian Revolution. I've just started reading "Adventures in the Anthropocene" and it's too early for me to have an opinion one way or another. I admit though, that my Lit Lineup reading is on hold while I'm reading Sherman Alexie's new book.... favorite authors' new work always takes priority.
