Rebecca (readwithcoffeeandtea) | 9 comments I started reading I Liked My Life, didn't finish reading it before I had to return it again, so good excuse to finish reading it!!

message 3: by Steph (new)

Steph | 38 comments That sounds like a good excuse to me too!

message 4: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I like to read all the sci fi and fantasy picks first, but Reader's Choice lets me get into other genres I don't usually find time for.

message 5: by Steph (new)

Steph | 38 comments Yay! That's what we love to hear! I've read books that I normally wouldn't even think to pick up because of Reader's Choice.

message 6: by Linda (new)

Linda Nielson | 279 comments These all sound really good. It will be hard to pick what to read first.

message 7: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I'm going to try to read at least six.

message 8: by Darin (new)

Darin | 121 comments Anyone up for reading all 20? I've read:
The Coaster
The Couple Next Door
Frontier Grit
The Girl Before (I gave this 5 stars)
I Liked My Life
The Mother's Promise (I gave this 5 stars)
The Secrets of Wishtide
A Study in Scarlet Women

12 more to go in 3 months!

message 9: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments Wow! I don't think I've ever gotten all of them.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 767 comments I often try to read them all.... and I've gotten close many times. Haven't read any yet this round though.
So many books.... so little time....

message 11: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I've read about 10 books a month this year so far, and it's still not enough to keep up.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 767 comments I'm really streaky lately. I'll read 5 in a week and then not read anything at all for 3 weeks.
I've always been that way (I call it a binge and purge personality) but with all the kids and all the things it's gotten worse as I've gotten older.

message 13: by Darin (new)

Darin | 121 comments I finished listening to Leave Me, and am now listening to Girl in Disguise, which I'm enjoying, and reading A Green and Ancient Light, which is good, too.

message 14: by Steph (new)

Steph | 38 comments Great job, Darin!

message 15: by Darin (new)

Darin | 121 comments Just finished reading A Green and Ancient Light - loved it!
Finished listening to Girl in Disguise and These Honored Dead, both of which I enjoyed. 8 more to go!

message 16: by Darin (new)

Darin | 121 comments Finished Confectioner's Tale and gave it 3 stars, but I have a friend who absolutely loved it. For me, I read about 200 pages and then skimmed the rest because I just couldn't get into it, but wanted to see why my friend thought it was so amazing.
Just started listening to Heartstone and To the Bright Edge of the World, and reading Secret Ingredient of Wishes.

message 17: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I finished I Liked My Life. It's not my normal genre, but it was pretty good. I'm half-way through The Girl Before now.

message 18: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments How much of the book do I have to read to be able to vote on it? I am not very gripped by this one I just started.

Darin | 121 comments Audrey wrote: "How much of the book do I have to read to be able to vote on it? I am not very gripped by this one I just started."

I generally try to read about 50 pages, and if I'm still not into it, I feel like I've given it a chance.

message 20: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments That's what I normally do. I haven't quit a book in a long time, but this one is so dull so far.

Darin | 121 comments Audrey wrote: "That's what I normally do. I haven't quit a book in a long time, but this one is so dull so far."

Which book is that? I just marked as finished "To the Bright Edge of the World." I listened to 1/3 of it and had such a hard time caring about the story. Moving on to more interesting things to me.

LOL -- same one. I finished the first CD but am not gripped. It's just not my style, I guess. Did you actually finish it?

I liked "I Liked My Life" and "The Girl Before" pretty well, and those aren't my normal genre.

That's funny! No, I didn't actually finish listening to it - I would stop/start/stop/start. Just felt bad giving it 2 stars because it has a 4+ rating, but so many books, so little time.

I like those two books you mentioned, as well. That's what I like about Reader's Choice - it gives you opportunities to pick up something you wouldn't normally pick up.

message 24: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I have found some of my favorite books this way (Poison Study, Theft of Swords).

I have checked out at the moment The Coaster, The Dry, Heartstone, The Secret Ingredient of Wishes, and A Green and Ancient Light.

But I got Michael Vey 7 a few days ago, so that's a priority right now.

message 25: by Darin (new)

Darin | 121 comments I have Michael Vey 7 on hold, but suspended it so I could reach my goal to read all 20 Reader's Choice titles. Hoping to get done with all 20 before my beach vacation in a month. Then, on the beach, I can read Michael Vey and the others on my personal list.

message 26: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I want to have Michael Vey done by Comic Con because there might be spoilers there. I also want to savor it.

message 27: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 4 comments Here's the Nancy Pearl rule for how many pages you should read “If you still don't like a book after slogging through the first 50 pages, set it aside. If you're more than 50 years old, subtract your age from 100 and only grant it that many pages.” So the older you get, the fewer pages! It's an aging perk!

message 28: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I've heard the rule about 100 minus your age; I like it.

message 29: by Brianon (new)

Brianon Sheffield | 27 comments I'm excited to read some of these books, but I can't find the Reader's Choice display at the Taylorsville branch! I just moved from Holladay, which always had them all right by the entrance. I'm lost!

message 30: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments You can cheat and just put some on hold -- there's the list at the top of the thread.

message 31: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 112 comments Suzanne wrote: "Here's the Nancy Pearl rule for how many pages you should read “If you still don't like a book after slogging through the first 50 pages, set it aside. If you're more than 50 years old, subtract yo..."

I usually do 50-100 pages before giving up...unless there is something that I find truly offensive and then I'll give up much faster. That doesn't happen often, but I don't feel any need to continue to read something that I find offensive and in bad taste.

message 32: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I finished The Coaster. It's odd, but it kept me laughing the whole time.

message 33: by Darin (new)

Darin | 121 comments Hooray - finished reading/listening to all 20! Not sure I'll do that again, but we'll see how the next list looks.

message 34: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments Wow! Congrats.

I just finished The Secret Ingredient of Wishes -- pretty good -- and A Green and Ancient Light -- also pretty good.

Thanks! Probably won't do that on the next list, but we'll see!
