Donal, a young boy, growing up on a ranch in Montana is sent cross-country to spend the summer with his great aunt when his grandmother needs to have surgery. This is the story of his adventures on the Dog bus (Greyhound) where he meets a colorful cast of characters. His aunt is quite different than his grandmother and doesn't really know how to deal with an almost teen-age boy. Luckily, Donal's Uncle, Herman the German, is more amenable and the two become fast friends. So much so, that when Kate sends Donal back early --- Herman decides to run away with Donal.
This is a charming story, but it was very slow --- especially at the beginning where is seemed like Donal would never get to his Aunt house in Wisconsin. The setting is the 1950's and the mood overall is like a classic "feel-good" movie. There were some humorous parts, but definitely it was a by-gone era since there is no way that anyone would let a 12/13 year old travel on a bus across the country alone.
