John | 3917 comments This is a feature I have been meaning to get around to for a while ... and, finally, here it is! I'll start a few threads to get things going, but if you folks feel there's anything that needs a separate discussion section, please feel free to start your own thread(s) as well.

message 2: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2212 comments Thanks for doing this, John! These will be a great resource for those of us who are constantly trolling for new books. ☺

message 3: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments I intend it for series recommendations/discussions and such, rather than "What I'm reading now" which should stay in the monthly area.

message 4: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie | 4024 comments Ditto

message 5: by Bobby (new)

Bobby Bermea (beirutwedding) | 86 comments I'm not quite following. Sorry for being dense. So, we just post here about audiobook series that we think are other people should listen to/read and discuss them?

message 6: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Don't sell yourself short, you get the idea just fine!

message 7: by CatBookMom (new)

CatBookMom | 1082 comments Thanks for doing this, John.

message 8: by Sandy (new)

Sandy I did a check of all the categories - even ones I never read - this should be fun

message 9: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 1721 comments Could you add Fantasy/Sci Fi? Audiobooks caused me to rediscover that genre.

message 10: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments They are there as separate threads already. If you feel a book qualifies as both, pick one.

message 11: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 1721 comments Sorry, the list was cut off on my screen so I only saw the first few categories, I now see there are many more

message 12: by Bill (Just a) (new)

Bill (Just a) | 911 comments I see Historical Fiction but not History Nonfiction. I assume just use the catch all "Non Fiction" thread?

There is Sci Fi and Fantasy but there is also Horror. Perhaps Horror goes with Fantasy? I guess Stephen King has his own thread elsewhere and he is the most prolific.

message 13: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments There is a thread called "Nonfiction - History", Bill. Anyone who wishes to start a Horror thread may do so; I just didn't think of it.

Bill (Just a) | 911 comments John wrote: "There is a thread called "Nonfiction - History", Bill. Anyone who wishes to start a Horror thread may do so; I just didn't think of it."

Well there certainly is a "Non-fiction History". Must be my Mad Cow.

On Horror I am not fussy. However you want to draw the line works for me. Until I started listening to so many books and reading the various discussions I tended to lump all paranormal books together. Things are evolving.

message 15: by R. (new)

R. Manolakas | 33 comments Horror, non-literary fiction (where S. King is in), paranormal, science fiction, non-fiction history, supernatural, horror, occult, fantasy, etc. the names are many and overlap--even vague. In sales, "a confused mind says no", but also a confused mind also says yes but doesn't know which button to push--maybe some day this mess will be defined/cleared up/etc. I just say "beyond the human five senses", so extrasensory might be another genre!!!!!! ps. (then we have the audiobook categories).

message 16: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose | 152 comments Could we possibly add chick lit to the categories?

message 17: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Sure - go right ahead!

message 18: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Boyles (cwf1965) | 162 comments Briar Rose wrote: "Could we possibly add chick lit to the categories?"

I agree. We need that category. I like a good chick lit occasionally.

message 19: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Be my guests - start the category yourselves and have fun!

message 20: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 354 comments Hi! I've been reading your posts all summer and my "to listen" list has been growing longer and longer, thanks to your recommendations. I've been listening to audio books since the 90s when they were audio cassettes. A few years ago I moved to an ipod and now I'm listening on my phone. One month I listen to a long, long book and then the next month I listen to four or five 10-12 hour books before going back to a long read. I'm almost finished the eighth book in the Outlander series. I belong to Audible for books that I can't download from the library.

Aղցela W. Hi my name is Angela and I just joined this group I am not sure where to post this but here goes. I love listening to audio books. I am a member of audible and I am hoping to find a site that offers cheaper audio books and get recommendations.

message 22: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments I suppose we should start a new member introductions area, Angela, but in the meantime ... welcome!

You've found the right group! Be sure to check out the Audible Offers thread since sales and special deals are posted there. Plus, you'll find other threads talking about the free library loan services and other audiobook venders. Also be sure to check out the monthly thread where people talk about what they are currently reading... you'll find lots of great books there, too. Welcome to a community of audiobook addicts!

You might like the books that authors have posted on Podiobooks http://podiobooks.com/

Some of the audio books recorded form Public Domain on LibriVox are pretty good.
https://librivox.org/

I noticed you mentioned elsewhere you like Erotic and you may find more you like a The Nobilis Erotica podcast
http://nobilis.libsyn.com/

I use my library card for books on CD a lot.
Often there are specials on Amazon that have buying both kindle and audible versions costs less than buying the audible version alone.

message 25: by Zack (new)

Zack | 21 comments you may also like audio story magazines like
StarShipSofa, Escapepod, and ClarkesWorld
http://escapepod.org/ links to the other shows on right side of this web page.
also audio dramas which Sonic Society and Radio Drama Revival showcase many currently in production
http://sonicsociety.org/ http://www.radiodramarevival.com/
It was humorous how long it took me to realize that the show website has links to the featured audio dramas websites

message 26: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2 comments So glad I found you!! My name is Heidi and I'm an Audible addict. I really want to share my faves and discover new ones. My top 3 (in case you wondered) are The Hiding Place, The Boy Who was Raised as a Dog, and I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend.
I love classics, the courses series, non-fiction, and anything dealing with Psychology. Oh and anything dog-related :)

Welcome from a fellow addict! I'm an audioholic and am not looking for a cure, only more of my drug of choice--audiobooks.

message 28: by Kimiko (new)

Kimiko Alexandre (kimi_alexandre) | 1 comments Hi! I'm new to the group. I am a soon to be author and I run a podcast and narrate for ACX. I am on my 3rd book narration. I often get free codes for the books I do. I am happy to give some of them out if anyone wants them (a review would be appreciated as well).

I've been in several podiobooks and it's how I got into doing voice work to begin with.

I haven't decided how I am going to release my book in audio form. My urge is to let someone else produce the product...but I also know that doing it chapter by chapter might also be a good way to drum up interest in buying the book. Anyway, wanted to say hello and that I'm happy to be here.

If you have any audacity or ACX questions feel free to ask and I'll happily answer if I can. :)

Welcome! It's always great to meet another audiobook fan.

message 31: by Kim (new)

Kim McMahill | 2 comments Hi, I'm new to this group. I've been writing adventure and romantic suspense for years, and I've recently had two of my novels made into audiobooks. It's pretty freaky hearing someone else read your novel, but it's an exciting new venture. Thanks for having a place to talk about audiobooks.

message 32: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Welcome, Kim. Feel free to check out our author and promotions sections as well.

message 33: by Denise (last edited Aug 15, 2015 11:39AM) (new)

Denise Hello - I just joined this group as I've become a big fan of audiobooks in the last year or so and have listened to a lot of books I never would have "read" in print form. I have an Audible account and love it.

However, an article I just read in the New York Times has made me want to reduce my use of Amazon-related services, and I was wondering about alternatives to Audible. I'd prefer services with downloadable content rather than streaming only.

Thanks!

[Edited: uh-oh...thought this was intro message thread for all the group, not for genre discussions...will try to find another place to ask my question....]

message 34: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Most public libraries offer audiobook loans.

message 35: by Denise (new)

Denise Thanks, John...have never tried that, but will!

message 36: by John, Moderator (new)

Out of curiosity, what was the problem with Amazon? I have an extensive Audible library and no problems with the service and love the selection.

message 38: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) | 519 comments Haven't you heard? Amazon is evil and by extension all the companies they own or control are also evil.

Personally I have no issues with Amazon or Audible either one. I love the level of service I get from both of them. Guess that makes me evil too!

message 39: by Denise (new)

Denise Ha, not evil! I still use Amazon when I have to and have had not problems with with Audible. Was just wondering about other options for listening and accidentally posted this in the wrong section. Will check out mod's suggestion for non-Audible thread.

message 40: by Carly (new)

Carly (queen_of_darkness) | 1 comments If you could paranormal romance, chick-lit, noir, horror, sci-fi to the catergories that would be great!

message 41: by Michael (new)

Michael Flanagan (loboz) | 44 comments Hi my name is Michael and I love audiobooks there is not a day go by when I don't listen. The wife says I am addicted to them...a lot worse thing to be addicted to I suppose.

I listen to them on my way to work, whilst cooking, cleaning, gardening, walking, cycling, mowing the lawn and on any downtime.

message 44: by Madge UK (new)

Madge UK (madgeuk) I am new to the group and have just added a Detective Fiction thread which I hope is acceptable. It is a genre I have just got into after many years of reading the classics here on GR's Readers' Review. My elderly eyes are now failing so I am relying more and more on audiobooks.

Thanks. That's a genre I read though a lot of the older ones I enjoy have yet to make it to audio.

message 47: by Chris (new)

Chris Horsefield | 3 comments Hi. I'm a long time member of Goodreads and just joined this Audio group. I prefer to read but recently have to work in another state one day a week and I prefer to drive so audio books are a great companion.

Welcome, Chris! I can see how you could have ended up here for your first message because of the topic saying "Introductory". But feel free to also post under the category near the very top of the threads (3rd one down under General on my view) that says "March 2020: New members introduce yourself here", so that more people will see and welcome you.

Laila Kazemi | 1 comments Hello

I recently got into audiobooks! I have been missing out. Feel free to drop me a recommendation.

message 50: by Arkrazormama (new)

Arkrazormama | 2 comments Has anyone tried this virtual voice thing ? I just noticed half the new releases in audible paranormal romance has this listed under narrator. I feel like the narrator is just as important as the author, so Im unsure of this new trend.
