The HBC completed the following book as part of a group read and spotlighted discussions. The discussion thread is housed in this folder.
This book was discussed in conjunction with the discussion of Herodotus which is archived here in this folder with the other discussion threads.
The following was a fantasy novel by Gaiman that was heavily influenced by Herodotus so there were interesting elements in this fantasy novel.
The thread related to this book is also found in this folder due to the Herodotus connection. That is the only reason it is stored in the Ancient History folder and is part of Ancient History Series. Great novel by the way for those into fantasy.

The HBC completed the following book (The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje) as a supplementary read to the group discussion of the book - The Histories by Herodotus.
This book was also considered to be part of the Ancient History Series because of the strong influence of Herodotus and his work on the novel by Ondaatje.
Some might say that this is an historical fiction novel and work but the historical facts are not sequenced in any sort of linear fashion. The novel jumps around and the backdrop is World War II.
The English Patient himself and the nurse who takes care of the patient were based upon true characters but the biographical details are not factual in every detail.
The patient carries around with him a copy of The Histories by Herodotus which influenced the character as well as the author himself.
The thread we opened up for the book is therefore housed here in the Ancient History folder because it accompanied our study and discussion of The Histories. Therefore it is also part of the Ancient History Series because of that connection and the fact that it was a supplemental read.

The above book is an historical fiction selection; yet it was extremely well researched by the author.

Ancient history as a term refers to the aggregate of past events[1] from the beginning of writing and recorded human history and extending as far as the post-classical history.
The phrase may be used either to refer to the period of time or the academic discipline.
The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000 years, beginning with Sumerian Cuneiform script; the oldest discovered form of coherent writing from the protoliterate period around the 30th century BC.
Ancient History covers all continents inhabited by humans in the 3,000 BC – 500 AD period.
The broad term Ancient History is not to be confused with Classical Antiquity.
The term classical antiquity is often used to refer to Western History in the Ancient Mediterranean from the beginning of recorded Greek history in 776 BC (First Olympiad).
This roughly coincides with the traditional date of the founding of Rome in 753 BC, the beginning of the history of ancient Rome, and the beginning of the Archaic period in Ancient Greece.
