Does this style of storytelling work for you? Normally not so much, I like the creativity involved in creating a full narrative with enough detail in a limited format but I often find it strained or lacking. However this book was awesome, I thought it was such an interesting concept and i really appreciated how much thought and planning went into contracting it!
Would you recommend? Yeah, it was a cool concept both in terms of the story and the execution. It's also a relatively short and easy read.

Would you recommend? Yes!

message 10: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I finished last night, just barely in time! The only reason it took so long was because the book I intended to use didn't make it from the library in time. Luckily, my last book of the month ended up consisting at least partially of letters so I decided to count it.

Title: The Forgotten Daughter
Author: Renita D'Silva
Were the letters in your chosen book fictional or real?: One third of the story was written in diary entries, one third as letters that were written then read out loud to another character, and the third was just prose. The entire thing was fictional.
Does this style of storytelling work for you?: Generally, yes although it depends exactly how it is handled. If a book is going to be formatted as letters, then they should actually feel like real letters and not just normal prose with a "Dear X" attached to the front.
Would you recommend?: Yes, it was a good book. I wouldn't necessarily consider it a favourite, but I liked it.

Does this style of storytelling work for you? Probably, depending on the story.
Would you recommend? Maybe. I wasn't a fan until the letters from Nettie in Africa started being read.

Were the letters in your chosen book fictional or real?: Fictional
Does this style of storytelling work for you?: Yes, it did for this book. Though at times, I found myself wanting to know more than just what was represented in the letters.
Would you recommend?: Yes, it was a quick read, though based on the reviews, it seems like several people hate it because it does include some adultery.
