Wow, that was quick! Lol. I just downloaded it. Hopefully I can start this and The Healing Heart soon.
I did not mean to finish it so quick but it was really good. interesting them about Amish being non-violent even when you are in danger. Reminds me of the Amish school house shootings. I think it would be really hard to forgive someone who killed my child and accept it as God's will. Even though I know we need to forgive.
I wouldn't be able to. Call me what you will, but if someone killed my child, they'd be paying...
Spoiler
Do you think Ebbie was right to break off the engagement or should he have fought for her?

I'm kinda torn between these books. I like the hard issues Mehl addresses, but the dialogue among the characters is kinda forced. They don't really talk like normal people would, lol.
I just finished!
And I think Ebbie definitely had a right to break it off. It wouldn't have been very fair to him to marry Hope when she was thinking of other men.

Yeah. It was a shame it took so long for Hope to see him as the kind of man he truly was. I always thought the whole relationship with Jonathan felt kinda forced. Like it was just a plot device to create tension between the characters.
Several people have told me the next book in the series is the best. I think I liked the first book in the series best so far.

Description:
Gentle and unassuming Hope Kauffman has never been one to question or try to make changes. She quietly helps her father run Kingdom Quilts and has agreed to the betrothal her father arranged for her with the devout but shy Ebbie Miller.
Despite Hope's and other Kingdom residents' attempts to maintain the status quo, changes have already begun to stir in the small Mennonite town. The handsome and charismatic Jonathon Wiese is the leader of the move to reform, and when one of Kingdom's own is threatened by a mysterious outsider, Jonathon is one of the first to push for the town to arm itself. Hope's fiance, Ebbie, is at the forefront of those demanding the town stay true to its traditions of nonviolence.
When strange incidents around town result in outright attacks on several townspeople, Hope can't help but question what she's always been taught. As the town that's always stood so strong together is torn apart at the seams, Hope is caught between opposing sides, both represented by those she has come to care for. With tensions high and lives endangered by an unknown threat, Hope fears Kingdom can never survive in one piece.
