I appreciate her other qualities yet a lot of things about her also irks me. I don't hate her but...dislike maybe.

I think that tess is more developed as a character even though there was only 3 books. I still think that clary needs to mature a little more, in CoHF they reminded us that she was ONLY 15! I was like WOW I thought she was like 17. and jace was only 16 turning 17 and again I was like wow!

I like Tessa,but i was really annoyed that she was juggling Jem and Will :/

I think will is the better choice. not that I don't LOVE jem I just like will more.

And I also prefer Clary better ^^^ because I don't know Tessa just annoys and frustrates me sometimes. Don't get me wrong Clary does too but more Tessa =) sorry but I agree with Kim ^^^ =)

Tessa's indecisiveness! yes, that's what irked me the most during Clockwork Princess. But yes, I think I liked her better than Clary. Like most of the people in this discussion, I agree that she needs to mature a bit. With that, I hope we get to see a glimpse of her and Jace's in The Dark Artifices. She'd be 21 then, let's see if Cassie can make a character grow. I'm excited actually.

Yes, she's better than Clary although I also don't like her that much.

I really liked Tessa! I don't see her as having any major issues out of normal faults.

you're not the only one who hates her. I had a hard time with her as the main character. I think the only reason I could get through the books is because the supporting cast was just sooo great. There were just things about Tessa that just really bothered me. She was rather stupid to me, though out of all the books the first book she is the most bearable. I absolutely hated her after she started going between Will and Jem. I liked it better when they were all just friends. But what can you do right? At least I could stand her enough to read through all of the infernal devices..I disliked Clary so much I couldn't get through City of Bones let alone the rest of the books.

Yeah, I get it. I can be a hater by myself, but I just don't like her. I admire that she's strong and all, but I was just really annoyed by her at times. She seemed really cocky and so... selfish. It seemed to me that she only did things on feelings and didn't think things through too much. I thought it was kind of jacked up that she didn't even cry when her brother died. I thought it was messed up how she could be so, I don't know, guiltless when it came to jumping between guys. And I get that it was supposed to be a good love triangle, and it was, but seriously? Fidelity? No? Just me? That's cool too.

I didn't get that she was guiltless at all. I think it broke her heart. All of it. The bad timing the fact that she loved Will and Jem equally. I felt it took her a while to come to terms with the fact that she could love both fiercely and equally and it not have any bearing on her love for the other... I think she grieved Nate long before he died.

i don't exactly hate her! its just irritating cause she was able to enjoy both WIll and Jem.. the most ridiculous part is, both boys still liked her even if she two timed them.. haha!
anyway, maybe i would understand what she did to both of them someday. If it was me too, i can't help falling in love with those two boys at the same time!! :D

I would only pick one. Then there would have been one left for the fangirls, like US!! But no, Tessa with just take them both. You know, just wait for one to kick the bucket... and wait for the other one to come crawling back.

Ha Ha Ha... This thread made me laugh a bit. Have you noticed that most Young Adult books have some sort of love triangle. Looking for Alaska, City of Bones, Twilight, etc. Even the Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe had one. Oh and Fifty Shades of... Poop... opps I mean Gray.

Here is the thing with LOVE TRIANGLES: You will love one of the characters more than the other. You will get made at the main love interest stringing them along. You will be sad if she or he doesn't choose the one character that you love.

It is just the nature of the beast.

I am lucky. I loved Will and Jem. Will made me angry so often. Jem was so kind.

Tessa is a lucky lady as well. You know she is if you have read all the books to include all of the City of bones books.

I do like Tessa. She is one of my favorate characters in this book. Clary I could stand less. They would ask her to stay and she would be gone putting everyone in danger.

I also agree that the developement of characters in this book series is wonderful.

well my favorite character is William herondale but from all the girls it is isabelle lightwood and from clary and tessa it is Tessa.

I know! almost every book has some sort of love triangle. it bothers me sooooo much. also in a lot of YA books the two main characters aren't friends in the beginning then they fall for each other then in the 2nd book they break up.

I never understand the super love effect either.

I absolutely hate Tessa! I'm sorry but she seems like a horrible person! When she couldn't have Will she went to Jem, when she thought Jem had died she went to Will, when she saw Jem was alive during the battle she ran straight to him, when she couldn't have him because he was a Silent Brother she stuck with Will, then when Will died and Jem was free again she went back to him! She treats these perfect boys horribly and messes up their friendship, not being indecisive as such but just taking the best of whatever is available at that moment, taking advantage, marrying Jem but when he's 'dead' and it seems she's going to die, throwing herself at Will! I HATE Tessa! I'm sorry but...

If she didn't go from one boy o the next then shewould be fine xx

i dont hate tessa but i wonder why she did not concern herself in the welfare of her grandson when brother Zachariah could(in book 5)i feel she could have protected jace from valentine if shad tried.

Every character has his/her flaws just like people so Mae you're right: Tessa isn't perfect.

I don't like Clary or Jace very much. They were my least favorite couple in TMI. However, I LOVE Tessa. I can relate to her so easily. Her personality is very much like mine.

On love triangles-- I don't hate them. They can be very well done sometimes, but it is very easy to write a poor love triangle. I, personally, think that Cassandra is the QUEEN of love triangles. My favorite is Jem-Will-Tessa, because I love all of those characters. Will was my favorite from the very beginning, but I grew to love Jem almost equally. I knew that if I was in Tessa's place, I would never be able to decide between Jem or Will. I would never want to hurt one of them by choosing the other. If Jem had not become a silent brother, I (in Tessa's place) would not have chosen either of them. I prefer the infernal devices because I feel that there is much more friendship-love than in the mortal instruments, and I find that love between friends BEAUTIFUL in books.

I was reading the rest of this thread, and it made me laugh. Did some of the commenters on this thread actually read the book? If they did, the COMPLETELY missed the point that Cassandra was trying to make. The point of the love triangle in TID was to prove that you could love more than one person. Tessa, Jem, and Will loved each other SO much. The secrets they kept were in an attempt to prevent suffering.

Jem says in Clockwork Princess, "Will is myself, my own soul, and if I am not to have the keeping of your heart, then there is no other I would rather have that honor."

And Tessa did not "two-time" either of them! Gabrielle - Four's ma bae said "The ending especially the prologue was unfair, she doesnt get both, she mugged Jem off and i know it was years and years past Wills death, but it felt too happy, to unrealistic." (Did you mean Epilogue?)

It WAS years and years past Will's death. Will said: "they have both been alone for so long... this brings me peace" He was dead. Tessa still loved him, Jem still loved him, but remember that Tessa and Jem love each other. Tessa loved both Will and Jem, which is why this ending was GENIUS. It worked. It wasn't unrealistic. Cassandra Clare writes happy endings. She writes satisfying endings. There is nothing wrong with a character getting a "happily ever after"--which Tessa, Jem, and Will all get.

I think that many of these commenters ought to reread the series in more detail--it doesn't seem to me like you've read the books at all. (and yes, it is perfectly fine to have your own opinion. This is mine. I am not hating on anyone else's thoughts, just presenting my own.)

I wouldn't say I hate Tessa, although I did start to dislike her as the trilogy progressed and questioned what was so special about her to infatuate Will and Jem so deeply.

I did hate Tessa at the very start. She was always asking the questions that were very personal. To me, she matured as the trilogy progressed. She wasn't asking the really personal questions anymore. I supoose that would ba what drove me hate away.

I hated Tessa too.

I think Tessa is an alright character but she can act kinda pestering at times. She uses Jem so much and he is oblivious to it. She acts all sweet and innocent but really she keeps having guys on her mind at all times. Like control your hormones woman! (<-- although she's not too bad about it). And yes I too agree that she's better than Clary.
