This is the thread for our November Group Read. This month, I am ecstatic to announce that we have longtime horror stalwart, Michael McBride, to join as a Guest Author. As many of you know, Michael is a horror legend and has been scaring the daylights out of us with over 20 novels and novellas to his credit. The one we'll be reading couldn't be any hotter off the presses. Subhuman is set to release on October 31st! So there are no excuses not to join us in what promises to be a great read. He's also agreed to give away signed copies of Subhuman to two lucky winners that join in on the group read and post honest reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. This is Michael's first time joining us here at HA and I know he's excited. So, without further ado, please help me welcome, Michael McBride!

Adam (adamreads1) Michael, which book of yours would you recommend to someone new to your work?

message 8: by Michael (new)

Michael McBride | 55 comments Hmm...Subhuman's actually a fairly good place to start. Maybe Burial Ground?

Me, too, so this is a perfect match! Read so much praise for Michael's books that it is finally time to try one myself.
Plus, next week is holiday, so I hope I will be able to squeeze in some extra reading time :)

Michael McBride | 55 comments It'll be nice, Kimberly. We don't get to hang out like we used to.

Michael, one of the first questions that I always ask is about the cover, and I love the cover of Subhuman. What can you tell us about it? Who did the design and artwork? How much control do you have in the design?

Bill (shiftyj1) | 4891 comments Hi, Michael! I think it's great that you are doing this for us. I already read (and loved) Subhuman. Thank you, Netgalley! And thank you, Michael for getting your work out there for all of us to enjoy! Looking forward to the discussion.

Michael McBride | 55 comments The cover was designed by Lou Malcangi. He's an in-house designer for Kensington. (I had the opportunity to meet him and he's a great guy who absolutely loves what he does. Believe it or not, he got his start doing Sweet Valley High covers!) He and my editor worked together to design the cover. I didn't see it until the approval phase, but I was blown away. It's probably a blessing I wasn't involved as I would only have screwed things up. Have you seen the cover for the second book, Forsaken?

message 24: by Michael (new)

Michael McBride | 55 comments Hi Kasia! Great to meet you! Thanks for picking up my other stuff!

message 25: by Michael (new)

Michael McBride | 55 comments Bill! It's been too long. I'm glad Subhuman worked for you. And I'm only able to get my work out there because of people like you. It's a pretty sweet arrangement.

Lena | 2673 comments I enjoyed my ARC of this. Have you begun writing the second book yet? This is the kind of series that gets better as the characters become a team.

message 31: by Michael (new)

Michael McBride | 55 comments Awesome! Thanks, Lena! The second book is called Forsaken and it comes out 4/28/18. And you're totally right, I'm working on book three now, and this is where the team really comes together.

Actually, the cover is what caught my eye first (before I read your name as the author). Show me a cover with snow and ice on it and I just have to check it out...I love books with a double chilling effect!

message 37: by Michael (new)

Michael McBride | 55 comments Right on! I'll pass that on to Lou. He'll be thrilled!

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments I'm picking up my copy today - hoping to find it at a new independent bookstore I just discovered here! B&N is my fallback if not. Either way, I'll send you pictures, Mike. So glad you're doing an author invite read! My copyediting schedule has eaten most of my free reading time this year, but I'm NOT missing this one! 😊

Or maybe not getting it today. Apparently "In Stock" is a loose term at B&N. Sigh. We haven't had a non-used bookstore worth a damn in Dallas since Borders gave up. The independent one looks interesting, but it's a small store with a broad focus, so their genre selection is quite limited. Looks like Amazon here I come! 😊

message 50: by Michael (new)

Michael McBride | 55 comments Sorry, Robert. I've found the same thing here. I hope you like the book, whenever you finally get it. :)
