Katey Kontent (great name!!) goes to an art exhibit and sees someone she knows in the photography exhibit of photos from the 30's and 40's. These photos trigger her to reminiscence about 1937 which was a key turning point for her life. Tinker Grey is the man in the photos and her and her best friend Eve meet him at a jazz club a couple day before New Years. Both girls are interested in Tinker, but all three are impacted by an event with far reaching consequences.

First, I loved Katey. She is spunky, smart, independent and ahead of her time. She starts in the secretarial pool at a law firm (view spoiler). She was born to Russian parents and grew up in Brighton Beach, but ends up elbow to elbow with New York high society during this fateful year. There were definitely some twists that I didn't see coming and a clever tie-in the title. I'm not sure why it took me so long to pick this one up, but I am now excited to read A Gentleman in MoscowTowles' next book.

Amy | 12932 comments Jolene, you are still on my shortlist for reading twin! That was a great review a great book. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I think you'll really enjoy Gentleman as well.

Susie I just started this. I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth in.

Amy | 12932 comments Susie, of course you're the only other on right now! It's 4:15AM in the United States. Australia must be bustling. I'm going to try for the third time to crawl back into bed. My book is not engaging so it could theoretically put me to sleep, but I don't dare turn on the light because my seven-year-old is between us and he shouldn't suffer for my midlife problems.

Susie It’s 725pm here. Go to sleep lady! ;-)

Anita Pomerantz | 9287 comments LOVED this one, Jolene. So not surprised you were in the same camp. And so glad!!

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I've a had a friends copy of this for ages on my bookshelf. I like the idea of the setting, but I don't think I've picked it up because I still don't really get what genre, and what its "about". Definitely a good option for high notes this year!!

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments Well, it's definitely historical fiction. It reminded me of old movies where girls moves to city and makes something of herself while trying to stick up for herself as well....

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Thanks for the clarification, JoLene. I love a good historical fiction, and really need a break from WWII historical fiction. So this sounds like a good fit.

Sounds like the word 'moxie' will be used in this book, lol.
