Grocery The Buying and Selling of Food in America By Michael Ruhlman 4 stars
I love food, cooking, grocery stores and the writing of Ruhlman so I like this book more than the average person would, but I still recommend it. Ruhlman was (in this book and other works) inspired by his father’s love of food and cooking for friends and family, which began at the local grocery stores. When his father died Ruhlman began to research the old stores where they shopped, the history of general stores and the state of the grocery business today, and how Americans shopped and cooked then, now and into the future. All of these subjects could be a book by themselves, and footnotes direct the reader to more in depth reporting. Here Ruhlman focuses on the people and history which interest him and resonate emotionally.
