Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments This prompt is the third one in the "4 Elements" multi-prompt and it is all about Water. You can choose any book that is linked to water either in the title, content, setting, cover, name of the author, etc.

-----------------------------------
Suggestions:
Global Citizenship Water
Boat Books
Books of the High Sea
Fishermen Novels
Sea Creatures
Rivers
Down by the Sea
Ice and Snow
Water/Sea/Rain on the cover
Books about Oceans, Water or Ice (fiction and non fiction)
Swimmers on the cover

-----------------------------------

Optional questions:
- What are you reading for this category?
- Why did you choose this book?
- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Again I have two picked out....

Into the Water ( thats a definite)
but I also just got a hardcover copy of The Water Knife for $5 at Barnes and Noble

message 3: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments Also thinking of Into the Water because I thought Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train was a great thriller. But I might read Women Pirates and the Politics of the Jolly Roger.

Laura • lauralovestoread | 89 comments The North Water
Into the Water
At the Water's Edge
The Hurricane Sisters
Beautiful Ruins
Ugly Love
On the Island
The Vacationers

Thought most of these water on the cover were enticing enough to want to read and some just had the word water in the title

message 5: by Mely (new)

Mely (mneg) | 28 comments Watership Down
Mystic River
anything having to do with mermaids

message 6: by Tamula (new)

Tamula | 65 comments If you like fantasy, I recommend Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn. I've already read the first two books in this four book series but I am going to read the third book, Jeweled Fire, for challenge #14.

message 9: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmyers) | 539 comments I hope I understand this correctly. For water, I have chosen The Lying Game by Ruth Ware, because water is essential both to the setting and the plot of the story.

message 10: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1060 comments I'm planning on reading Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool for this one - the water element being her name, as I'm linking the four prompts by having an author, a title, a cover and one that's based on content.

There is also water on the cover

Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool

and there's a person in the story called The Fish, so it gets almost the full set.

message 11: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments No, my four element choices are not linked at all. I thought about doing that, but in the end I wasn't really excited about the lists I came up with, so I broke them loose.

For water, I'm debating between four:
Memory of Water - this one obviously has "water" in the title, but it's actually about drought, so I'm not sure how I feel.
The Drowned Cities - "drowned" counts as "water" right?
Along the Infinite Sea - this one is listed as third in a series, I haven't read the other two, but it doesn't look like you really need to read them in order. And yet. I hate reading book series out of order.
The Neon Rain - this is my front-runner choice, except I think it's not really very much about water. But "rain" is "water" right??

For anyone looking for a middle school choice, Fish Girl is a watery option. I thought the art was lovely. Some reviewers react strongly to how abusive they thought the fish-girl's situation was (trapped in a tank and all), but I didn't see it that way, and my 11 year old read it after me and she didn't feel that way either. Like me, she was enchanted by the friendship between Fishgirl and the octopus and really wished THAT had taken center stage in the story!

message 12: by Clare (last edited Jan 07, 2018 09:03AM) (new)

Clare (-clare-) | 115 comments - What are you reading for this category?
Into the Water

- Why did you choose this book?
I've had this on hold at the local library since October and had originally planned to use it for a task last year but it only became available a few days ago.

- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?
Nope not at all linked.

message 13: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I had several options for this one. I decided to go with The Silver Dark Sea by Susan Fletcher. I've had this on my TBR List for quite awhile. I don't know why I haven't read it yet because I've really enjoyed other books by this author.

message 14: by Tammy (new)

Tammy | 704 comments I'll be reading 2 since I am doubling the AtY fun this year. I picked The North Water by Ian McGuire because the reviews fascinated me. The second book I picked was The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch. I read a short story of hers last year and really liked it and I think this is the book she is most famous for.

message 15: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 168 comments - What are you reading for this category?
Brother Fish

- Why did you choose this book?
It's a huge book, eight hundred and something pages, but it's on BorrowBox through my library so I will listen to it.

- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?
Not in the slightest.

message 16: by Charity (new)

Charity (faeryrebel78) | 552 comments - What are you reading for this category? Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige
- Why did you choose this book? I picked it up at a used book store over a year ago and randomly decided to finally read it.
- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked? I have options for all of the others but they aren't linked to each other. I decided those like I did this one randomly.

message 17: by Carol (new)

Carol | 67 comments Carol Goodman – The Lake of Dead Languages by Carol Goodman

message 18: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments - What are you reading for this category? A Girl on the Shore

- Why did you choose this book? I was interested in to read this graphic novel and when I saw the sea on the cover I thought it was a good option for this category.

- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked? They are chosen, they are not linked ... although that could have been a good idea.

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (s4r4h) | 29 comments - What are you reading for this category?
The Scent of Rain and Lightning
This was a quick, enjoyable read...and I didn't guess the final twist, so points for that!

- Why did you choose this book?
It sounded interesting and was available for immediate download from the library.

- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?
No, they are not linked.

message 20: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley Stoeger brzozowski | 42 comments This book looks intriguing so I believe I will be reading this Just Add Water: A Surfing Savant's Journey with Asperger's.

message 21: by Laura (new)

Laura (texas318) | 104 comments - What are you reading for this category?
Lake Morality by Dawn Lee McKenna

- Why did you choose this book?
It is a new book in a series I already enjoy and it takes place on the Florida coast. This one features a death in the water and the previous books always involve the ocean or lakes.

- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?
No they are not

message 22: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
I just finished Along the Infinite Sea for this prompt.

I chose this book because it was on my TBR forever, and I really liked The Forgotten Room, which Beatriz Williams helped write, and I put it with this prompt because I knew this one would be a harder one to fill than some of the other prompts that it fit.

I'm not really linking my elements... not because I don't want to, but because I'm reading out of order and, when I'm mood reading, I tend to choose and book first and figure out the prompt after. It's hard to link them like that. I'll probably end up having all of the books have the element in the title, because it's easiest to pick them that way.

PS Nadine, you definitely don't have to read "in order". In fact, this book ends in 1966, and Tiny's book (#2 in the collection) starts in 1966. So the author didn't really write them in order at all.

message 23: by Shannan (last edited Feb 07, 2018 10:51PM) (new)

Shannan | 36 comments I read it last year, but The Summer Book by Tove Jansson would be perfect for this prompt.

For my choice, I read Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea, a very funny comic/graphic novel geared towards kids. My 6-year old and I both loved it.

My element books aren't linked at all.

message 24: by MN (new)

MN (mnfife) I've just finished The Lady of the Rivers, one of Philippa Gregory's magnificent Plantagent and Tudor Novels. Highly recommended!

message 25: by Srijana (new)

Srijana | 9 comments What are you reading for this category?
I read The Weight of Water by Sarah Crossan

Why did you choose this book?
I chose this because I'm planning on reading everything by Sarah Crossan. Love her poems and writing.

Kim (kmyers) | 539 comments MN wrote: "I've just finished The Lady of the Rivers, one of Philippa Gregory's magnificent Plantagent and Tudor Novels. Highly recommended!"

I loved that book and went on to read the rest of that series!

message 27: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments What are you reading for this category?
The Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera

Why did you choose this book?
I had seen the movie so many years ago that I've forgotten it, but I remembered enjoying it.

If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?
No, not at all.

message 28: by Serendipity (new)

Serendipity | 441 comments I'd seen The Shark Club mentioned somewhere and it seemed like I might enjoy it when I was in the mood for a lighter read. But my library didn't have it then so I dropped off my radar. Then one day I saw it displayed at my library , read it and then realised it would fit this prompt!

message 29: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments I read Freshwater for this. It was an excellent book, although the plot did not have much to do with water. That's two books I've read now that just have the element in the title, so I think I am going with that theme for selecting the other two books also. So, yes, in that way my selections will be somewhat linked, but the books themselves will not be linked at all.

This just came in on my kindle recently and its the next in line on my carousel so I'm thinking I'm going to read it also for this prompt .....UGH, there goes the other choices I had picked out, lol.

I've heard really great things about it though so I'm definitely excited to read it :-)

message 33: by GailW (new)

GailW (abbygg) | 657 comments What are you reading for this category?
Before the Fall by Noah Hawley
Why did you choose this book?
It was a pick for a TBR Twin read and just happened to meet the requirement here.
If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?
No, not at all. I'm struggling with "Air"

message 34: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthag503) | 513 comments I read this for narrative nonfiction but it would fit in this category: Ghosts of the Tsunami Death and Life in Japan’s Disaster Zone by Richard Lloyd Parry

Water & Storm Country

- Why did you choose this book?
It's the third book in the Country Saga by David Estes. The series had been on my TBR pile since 2005, so it was a great chance to finally get into them.

- If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?
I've chosen 3 of them and the 4th (air) I haven't worked out yet. The other 3, Earth, water and fire are all from the same series by David Estes. 2 of David's series, (the Country Saga and the Dweller Saga come together in book 7 (e.g books 1-3 of dweller saga, and then books 1-3 of country saga, then book 7 combines both series. I had read the dweller series a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it, just couldn't find time to fit in the country saga. Now I've done that I can get onto book 7 - Earth Dwellers - which will be my earth element book.

message 36: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I just finished Ripple and realised it would fit this prompt perfectly as it is a story told from a dolphin's perspective. I highly recommend!

Stacey D. | 1908 comments What are you reading for this category? Coming to My Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook by Alice Waters

Why did you choose this book? I'm kind of a foodie and the author is a legend in that regard, though I'd never read any of her books or cookbooks. This memoir was on my TBR and it fit the challenge, due to her last name.

If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked? No, they are all different.

message 39: by Ann (new)

Ann S | 624 comments Just finished At the Water's Edge and really liked it. I laughed, cried, got angry and frustrated and wanted to smack a few characters. Sign of a good book, right?

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Why did you choose this book?

Rain is a form of water and the book discusses several famous Formula One races that took place in rainy conditions. The book is also set in Seattle, where it rains a lot. Plus, it's been on my TBR for over a year, so it's about time I got to it.

If you already have chosen your 4 Elements books, are they somewhat linked?

No, they all have some form of the element in their title, but they're not connected to each other.

Two graphic and two regular novels - but not particularly linked...

message 49: by Angie (new)

Angie | 65 comments I wound up doing Dark Bayou. Both the title and the cover link it to water.

I've done two of the other element prompts, and I have a couple of probable options for the last one. They are in no way related to each other. I just picked what I wanted to read.

message 50: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3307 comments I read The Beach House by Mary Alice Monroe. I wanted to read a "summer" book and this one had a nice setting on the water off of South Carolina.

My 4 element prompts aren't linked at all.
