You made it to the end! How did you like this one? Anything stand out?

Holy moly. Part 3 is almost like a completely different book than part 1! It was so much more action packed at the end. And so many twists. I am NOT a fan of unreliable narrators, but feel like this was set up really well.

What did you guys think of the ending? I really didn't like how it ended on a philosophical note. I guess it makes sense since throughout the story we focus a lot on Rachel's mental state and how it affects her. I just wasn't particularly a fan of the ending.

It got pretty gruesome as well and I wasn't prepared for that!

Can't wait to chat with you all!!!

Mely (mneg) | 6 comments The last part was so all over the place, but in a good way. What I remember most and had to reread three times was the scene where Rachel is in the apartment with Ned and Lars and the detective comes back for his hat and she shoots them but then the next sentence is like she's walking away like nothing happened. I was like WHOA, wait, what just happened... and then I realized that it was all in her head LOL.

Rachel definitely turns into a different person by the end of the book. All this time she had his passport. I kind of figured the people who died we're going to meet their fateful end. and the whole time Lehane was trying to think that her husband would die. I was so tricked by that nonsense LOL.
I agree with the philosophical ending. I didn't care for it too much either. and I don't know about these people raising children... hmmm

Patricia | 19 comments Well, that was an ending I didn't anticipate. When Brian was found to still be alive, I really didn't know what to believe. Krista, you are right, it's like I was reading a different book. I did guess two things that happened. I did think Rachael still had Brian's passport and I predicted they would end up taking care of Celab's daughter and her mother would end up getting killed since she was left at the safe house alone.

I wasn't expecting Racael to turn into "Bonnie" to Brian's "Clyde". LOL! Boy, she sure got over her fears, didn't she? I feel like the last part of the book was like watching an unrealistic movie. Although it had a lot of twists and turns near the end, I just couldn't get past Brian getting away with all that money and Rachael going along with it. I really was hoping Brian would be a good guy working for some secret agency....guess not! LOL. It was a good read but can you imagine what kind of parents they will be.😲

Wendy (wmaresca) I am not sure how I feel about the ending. I want to know what happened to them. I am glad she still had his passport. I wasn't thinking he was a con man. I thought maybe mixed up with organized crime or something. I was thinking pretty much from when they where on the boat until he told her about the blonde that it was his sister. Just the way he seemed to really love Rachel I couldn't imagine him having another family. Also how Caleb had said that she was coming with them all along kind of made me think that the blonde was definitely not his pregnant girlfriend.
Mely I was a little confused with the scene at her apartment at first also. I thought she was shot in the back and then all of the sudden she is on her way to getting on the elevator.
Rachel sure pulled a 360 after shooting Brian, she was ruthless at some points but I guess she felt to survive she had to do what she had to do. I still have to say I really liked Brian even though he was a con man I think he was a likable bad guy. He was a con man that had a good heart if that is possible. LOL
I will have to definitely pick up more Dennis Lehane books.

Great thoughts! I wasn't 100% satisfied with the ending either. Crazy how different this Rachel is from the one we met in the middle of the book. It's like she got some of her pre-Haiti mojo back! haha. I would be interested in reading more Lehane books too.
