Melanie | 1689 comments It's been a good year for books.
Fantasy
Kings of the Wyld: fun story in the vein of role-playing
Red Sister: a darker tale with good world-building

Sci-Fi
Dogs of War: newest installement of a series I follow; Jonathan Maberry has been kind enough to publish on or near my birthday two years in a row
Run Program: a light satiric, comedic AI story

YA- Fantasy
The Dark Prophecy excellent series
The Ship of the Dead excellent series
All the Crooked Saints stand alone from an author that is a favorite of mine

Podcasts that expanded into books
It Devours!
The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures

Not Sci-Fi or Fantasy, but so glad I read it and you should read it too
The Hate U Give: John Green compares this book to The Outsiders, claiming quite rightfully, that it will be the classic of our time.

Definitely have Kings of the Wyld up there and to agree with Melanie twice I 'd also have Red Sister and just to branch out Age of Assassins

About the only book that I have read that was published this year is Kings of the Wyld, which as others have said was a very fun and enjoyable read.

I am currently reading Oathbringer, which has been very good so far.

Edit: Whoops, forgot about Godsgrave, I quite enjoyed this book, despite being the middle book of a trilogy it really held its own and made me want to read more byt Kristoff.

Narilka | 390 comments I read a lot more new releases this year than I normally do, 5 of which were because of this group. All were enjoyable.

5 Stars:
Red Sister - Great start to the series. I'm looking forward to book 2 next year.

4 Stars:
A Dragon of a Different Color - Such a fun little self published urban fantasy series.
All These Worlds & For We Are Many - I fell in love with the Bobiverse when we did We Are Legion as a group read. The trilogy is done but hopefully there will be more stories in this world in the future.
Waking Gods - I was impressed with how much I liked this and the first book. It's quite a different story telling format and one I likely wouldn't have tried if it hadn't been one of our group reads. The full cast audio books are excellent.
Kings of the Wyld - More like 4.5 stars. Can't wait for book 2 :)
Precipice - This fills my gaming void. Feels a lot like playing in a MMO.
Windwitch - My current YA enjoyment.

Margo I did actually read 2 new releases in SF/Fantasy
Red Sister DNF
Waking Gods 3 star

In horror I nearly read Sleeping Beauties and Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis but for very bad friend reviews.

not relevant to this group read I read one in HF category, A Column of Fire, 3 star. In M&T I read The Dry which was pretty good and my vote went to The Girl Before.

Sorry if I put you off Lestat

message 10: by Margo (new)

Margo You were the first to put me off alright! Her writing is just not what it used to be. I read the first of her werewolf books earlier this year and parts of it made me flinch - not in a good way lol

My favorites published 2017:

Kings of the Wyld
Gather the Daughters (dystopian)
Strange the Dreamer
Godsgrave
Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood

(I normally don't get to so many books during their release year, so I'm pretty proud of myself this go around!)

I haven't read that many published this year.

Some were really good:
I Liked My Life
Age of Swords
The Final Spark

Some were averagely good:
Kings of the Wyld
Red Sister
Dawn Study
