This book was given to me by someone who really enjoyed it and thought I would too. I've tried 4 times now, only because of who gave it to me, and just cannot read it. I find it doesn't leave enough to my imagination, has too many "old" words that I have to keep looking up in her dictionary breaking up any flow I could find (does any book need to contain a language lesson?), and has a 3 year old that talks like a mature PhD. I've officially given up. Yet, when I read reviews almost everyone has enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

You're not the only one. I think I was the first to give it a negative review so I felt very much alone in my opinion. Even the initial few hundred ratings were overwhelmingly positive and I remember it had a 4+ average star rating for a while. But it looks like the rating has come down now to 3.77, which is still fairly high for GR but as quite as "how am I the only one who didn't like this book, what am I missing?" high.

I found the book hard to read not due to language, but because not much really seemed to happen. and when something did happen it seemed to hint at the events of something major instead of actually adding it to the story. too much to infer

I painfully made my way to the end of the book, just because I stupidly bought it (kindle) and wanted to get my monies worth. But I stress, it was a very painful read. First of all, it was waaaaay too wordy, too many words rambling around, and really no plot. Secondly, I like to be pulled into the book I'm reading, and this book just did not do it at all. A lot of times, I just didn't understand what the hell was going on, or where it was going. And I found myself just skimming through a lot of the book just to get to the end of it. I am extremely sorry that I paid money for this book.

If you're an archaeologist, historian or enjoy old world language then this is the book for you - unfortunately I'm not any of these people and it was a real grind to get through. I got my edition through my local library and was very determined to finish it so I could count it as one I've read towards a challenge set in one of the groups.

I really wanted to like this book. I love the time period and wanted to immerse myself in it. But my bookmark is at page 231 and I moved on to another book to take a break and haven't gone back to it. I didn't mind the detail or the language, though I had to keep checking the meanings and pronunciation because that's just the way I am. My problem was not much seemed to happen. I was reading and reading hoping for more energy and excitement. I don't need lots of sex or blood and gore but I do need something to happen to move things forward once in a while. I was really disappointed because, like I said, I love this time period and like to learn through well researched fiction.

Its a very long, wordy book. There were some really great, exciting bits mixed in with some really boring stuff that was hard to read. I kept reading because I like the setting, but there were points when I wanted to give up on it.

That"s not true I am an Historian and I did not care for this book. I tried to read it, but it was just too long and wordy and I wasn't sure what the point was. I made it 120 pages in and put it down.

I read it several years ago and only remember that I didn't like it and couldn't figure out why anyone recommended it. I don't rate anything with only one star, but I did this book. Normally if I become that off put about a book I throw it against the wall long before finishing any book that I am just not enjoying. I kept thinking that it would go somewhere.

I couldn't finish it. I had a hard time keeping the characters straight with their unpronounceable names and then I realized that I really didn't like any of them.

I just gave up at 120 pages! It's so dense and impenetrable.

I heard in on audio. The first disc dragged but then I got caught up in the story. It was really long (19 CDs?) but I had no problem sticking to the end. I've had a paper copy for years that I never got into, but it was the audio that got me hooked.

I did peek at the paper a few times to see how the names were spelled. I never would have come up with those prononciations on my own!

I loved Hild! Sorry you didn't. I read it. I'm wondering if it just doesn't work well as an audiobook.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it; I did. Daring heroine! But I had to let all the cluttered language and names and relationships flow over me more as sounds than comprehensible events.

I love it too. Listened to it on Audible and bought the hardcover.

The concept was interesting, but I lost interest in it when religion came into the mix.
