Hello, everyone! Welcome to our first Stand Alone of 2018! This month's stand alone is Carry On by Rainbow Rowell!

Summary:

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen.

That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.

Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here — it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.

Hopefully you will be joining us for this month's stand alone read! We would love to hear about what you thought about the book.

I am planning to start this in twenty minutes. I want to read at least the first five chapters. I am only aiming for one book a week. So four books a month. I'm going to be setting my goodreads challenge much lower than previous years.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I am hoping for 6 books a month so far. So much lower than last year.

I set my goodreads challenge for 50 books this year. I don't want to stress like I did last year when I realized I wasn't going to reach my 100 book challenge.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

I started this book at midnight. Got into it about 11 pages. Getting some serious Harry Potter vibes. Which I'm not mad about. It kinda makes me nostalgic and excited to continue reading the book.

I'm about 11 pages into it right now myself. I am still reading right now. I've been bouncing around through the boards as I notice people comment.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

The more I read this the more I'm like "This is a Harry Potter Fanfic! XD I'm not made at it tho. I just think that it's funny. Lol. I'm on page 30 now. I'm off work now tho so I can read a little more tonight! But now all I can think about is "Out, out, damned spot!"

Yes, I just read that not to long ago. I had gotten busy last night. I did just read the "Out, out, damned spot!" a few hours ago. I laughed reading it.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm on page 75 now. The spells are hilarious at this point!

I feel the need to get in on this. I have been so cold that I haven't wanted to do anything except curl up in a blanket.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

All I want to do is read right now! I'm gonna read for 10 minutes before work!

I'm about to put the computer down and start reading.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Read then, woman! I'm in love with Simon. He's such a cinnabun.

message 15: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
A Cinnabun? That's a new one.

I'm currently taking a break from reading to check in but I'm about to start reading again.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

So am I! It's nice and cloudy here. So I'll be reading more!

And yes, he's a cinnabun!

XD I don't mind! Also I finished reading Carry On by Rainbow Rowell . It was soooo good! I was getting worried that I would not enjoy it but I loved it!

I'm hoping to finish it tonight.

I loved this book so much!!! I couldn't put it down! I love rainbow Rowell writing this fantasy. Her contemporaries are great to read but I love her writing in a setting like this.

I agree. I thought the beginning was a little slow for me. Maybe like the first 100 pages I was like "Meh", but after that I zoomed through and finished it. I loved it! But now I'm ruined because I want more Snowbaz!

I loved it. It was such an enjoyable read by Rainbow. I have read Eleanor and Park and then I've also read Fangirl and I think Carry On is a good contender for my favorite Rainbow read.

I think this book was my favorite Rainbow Rowell book! I'm still gushing over it.

I still love Fangirl a lot. I think it describes most readers exceptionally well.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh I love Fangirl. I just loved Carry On more. Lol. As fangirls we enjoying reading fanfiction more than ourselves. XD

I have to say when I tried to read this a long time ago I did not finish it, but I love all of her other books so maybe I should try again and see if it was my mood.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
Try again it might be. I mean we've all had those one books that we read and it just isn't our favor the first time around but that second time we read it we actually enjoy it.

I love Cath. She is my favorite and then Levi. I mean that book was just perfect because it wasn't insta love. It wasn't a three-way love interesting. It was just a great book.

I agree!!! I think that is why I didn't like Carry on, I wanted that same feel as Fangirl and it wasn't appealing to me. But I get that way. I don't like the spin off to Mortal Instruments either because I just don't feel the same about the new characters.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I'm still trying to power my way through the Mortal Instruments series.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved the Mortal Instruments... And I become trash for Carry On...

I'm still powering my way through it. The first one kind of did me in. I am trying to read the second one I really am. I tried last year when we read it.

I’m with you only I’m a little more than halfway through. I don’t hate it. I just don’t love it. From what we read in Fangirl I basically knew what it was about because it’s Cath’s fanfic. I know the spells and stuff are supposed to be exaggerated and funny but it’s just too much for me. It would be ok if it was a short book but not for one that’s same length as actual Harry Potter. I actually don’t mind the characters. I like Baz and Simon. I even like Penny. But the whole nursery rhymes have power and the mage drives a Range Rover is too much. I feel like I would like it more if it didn’t seem so spoofy.

I like the idea of the story. I think Clary killed me.

Ok so I’ve continued to listen and I’m much more into the story now. I’m totally into Simon and Baz though I already knew that was coming because of Fangirl. I still think the spells are dumb but they aren’t as frequent in the second half so I can get over it. Im liking it now that I’m in the thick of things.
