just jumped to the top of my list.
That's a little like asking which potato chip everyone ought to eat (not many eat just one, and some people obviously shouldn't eat any). But I think I've enjoyed Willis's books as much as any in the subgenre. So...Doomsday Book

Wow, really, *Everyone should read* Outlander!? No, thanks. Just saying. Otoh: Once in a lifetime, everyone should eat one potato chip.... ;)

These two are my all-time favorites and wouldn't know which one to choose.
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Replay and Time and Again.The Outlander series is pretty good, but the time travel isn't central to the plot, it's more just a vehicle for putting the main characters in interesting situations.
For books in which the protagonist unwittingly travels back in time, is stuck there, and decides to try to improve things,"Connecticut Yankee" is No. 1, but I also like Lest Darkness Fall and Leo Frankowski'sThe Cross-Time Engineer series.
