I've been compiling my reading list and agree - some of these might be hard to know ahead of time. Maybe we can make suggestions for each other before we give up on the main characters, though.
Here are a few with medical main characters that I know of:
The Physician
Murder on Astor Place
A Duty To The Dead
The Midwife's Tale
Cutting for Stone
Middlemarch
Does anyone have suggestions for education?

I have two books about a head mistress.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
South Riding by Winifred Holtby (the one I decided to read)
Thanks for Medicine suggestions. Will check out.
LindaH-
I think Doctor Thorne is perfect for that category. I read it last year and think that while the romance is important, the doctor is the key character to every storyline in some way.

I read DT recently. Glad to hear it qualifies, I agree. I found a good one for Medicine on Allison’s list above though...

When I saw that my author and friend gave it a rave review AND I could get it on Audible, I knew which book to read. Thank you, Allison.

Jenny, I think clergy sounds good... but you can place R&B there for now and move it later if you need. Like a Wild Card. :)
Well, I am stuck now! I have everything but Miss Scarlet for Law! I am trying to find a book I own that will fit it, but am having very little luck!
