TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Hi folks. The purpose of this is to discover why I was having trouble starting new threads. I seem to have overcome the problem but I'm still not sure of the precise reason.

1. I set up an account as TwoddleBungler and signed in using my Amazon login. When I try to start a new topic that way, I have all sorts of Captcha problems and although I can comment on other people's threads, I can't create my own.

2. I set up another account (also called TwoddleBungler!) without going via Amazon. This time there was no problem creating a new thread.

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I didn't realize people were logging in through their Amazon accounts. That might explain all the trouble some people have with Captchas. As I already had a Goodreads account from before Amazon bought it I've never tried logging in through Amazon.

Please let me know when it's okay to delete this thread. If you want to keep it I'll rename it and move it to the trackless wastes.

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments I don't mind it being deleted but perhaps there could be a notice somewhere that explains the problem for others having trouble?

theDuke | 6491 comments I've never logged in via Amazon...I started a new account via Goodreads just as Zon was shutting down their forums...and every single time I've needed to set up a new thread, I've had to deal with that annoying Capcha.

So, I don't it's as simple as that, Twoddlebungler....although, granted I haven't opened up a second account....yet! Maybe i'm missing a trick here.

Helen The Melon | 3419 comments I didn't set up my account thro' Amazon either (and never log in using Amazon) and the couple of times I set up a thread I had to battle the "I am not a robot" (Captcha) test repeatedly grrrr.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments At the risk of sounding as daft as I most probably am anyway - how does someone log into Goodreads through Amazon? Is there a Link Button on there that can bring you onto here and vice versa?

I set my Goodreads Account up in the same way as Duke and I also have the Captcha test battle too every time I want to set up a new Thread as well. It can take me several goes, and an awful lot of swearing of words that I never even realised that I knew, before the System will grudgingly give way and accept me as a Human Being but the Threads have always still set themselves up afterwards ;o>

Lez | 7490 comments I’ve not yet tried to start a thread, but sometimes when using my iPad, at the top right of the page there’s an envelope icon with a number on it which seems to mean there are new posts on Goodreads. When I click on it I’m presented with a panel which says ‘Please confirm your Password,
Continue with Facebook or Continue with Amazon.’
If I enter my Amazon password, I get all the Captcha stuff, so I always go straight to Goodreads with my Goodreads password.

Interesting? - the Envelope Icon on my Laptop layout means that there is a Message from a Friend in my Goodreads Inbox. Nikky G is also having problems with her Goodreads Account as she only has the ability to post but has none of the clickable functions showing up for ... 'reply | edit | delete | flag*' ... and so it would seem that maybe the use of different Devices could be responsible for the way that Goodreads displays and works on an individual's Account as well?

message 10: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I did think it meant a message from a friend but when I check I’ve always read them all! I did suggest to Nikky that she tried the ‘Switch to: mobile version’ at the bottom right of the page which works for me when I lose the ‘reply, edit......’ but I’ve forgotten whether or not she found it.

Nikky sent me several messages over Christmas about how fed-up she was with it all and so I sent an Email to Goodreads about it on her behalf but only got a very vague kind of an Amazon answer in response - one that typically bore no relation at all to the question that was being asked.

I feel so sorry for her as it is putting her off wanting to keep on trying to get to grips with the Goodreads site and, if it was happening to me, I've no doubt that I would be feeling the same way too ;o<

All that I could suggest to her was to try using a different Device - and I also wondered if you can manage to access and get to use the Goodreads Forums on a Kindle instead? - as I know that she has one of them.

Nikky G (nikkyg) | 71 comments Hello Ladies! Suzy and Lez, I was starting to feel a bit shtooopid what with all the help and advice given. But, it was not my fault.
My Tablets just wouldn't show certain icons, and therefore, I was unable to access these pages.
Hello, Joaniepony! I don't believe we've met?
My name is Nikky and I have two Tablets. I can't cope with a laptop! Certainly, it's not mine, but my partner's, so I cannot afford to mess things up! ☺

Martin O' | 2196 comments As I'm not on facebook and at the time amazon was closing down I eventually managed to log on with goodreads using my email address and password which seems to work adequately enough. Granted I haven't tried to start a new thread or try anything too fancy so I haven't run into any real problems, quite happy just doing my thang! I recently purchased a kindle fire 7 which does have a link to goodreads through Amazon, from what I can make out they do share some kind of incestuous relationship.

Amazon acquired it in 2013, though it seems to have always been some sort of offshoot.
