The main protagonist is frustratingly ineffective, while the main antagonist is criminally insecure, narcissistic, petty, etc.
What keeps me reading is the fact that I enjoyed the first seven novels of the series. This prequel gives us background on the turn which is the event that led the Inderlanders (Supernatural Folk) to "come out" to humans. It also gives us background about the parents of one of the main characters in the series.

Just a heads up... There are only one or two characters that I've met so far (I'm a little over halfway through) that will also be in the main series. This book was written after the series was ended, so I think it can be read at any point. I tend to prefer chronological order over publication order which is why I'm reading it now.
