Luke (korrick) | 2004 comments There Never Was a Once Upon a Time, Carmen Naranjo, translated from Spanish by Linda Britt, 1989, Costa Rica, SHORT STORIES

"Each of the ten short stories in this collection is told in the first person by a child narrator, usually but not always female; each is told in a rambling and magically inconsistent present tense, as characterized by the opening lines of the title story: "There never was a once upon a time, you told me that afternoon at nearly six o'clock, and I answered: you're a liar, there is always a once upon a time, today, yesterday, tomorrow, because time always has room for long agos."...Through the rich imaginations of children, these stories describe the problems of youth—primarily adults who barely understand and rarely respect them— with inventive and sophisticated vitality."
