Dirk dies without anyone ever knowing he murdered at least three women. Would any other action have been feasible?

It was just different for the wealthy. Sarah didn’t want his parents to suffer and Frank didn’t need the blowback. At least those poor girls were vindicated.

It was interesting how Sarah was trying to ease his suffering as Dirk was dying, even after he’d tried to kill her. Guess that was her medical training.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments Not at that time and place. I wonder if future books will allow Sarah to distance herself from -- not just her parents and the culture -- those underlying class systems that still color her psyche.

No doubt she will, Charlene. I think even now she’s starting to awaken.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I agree.

Dirk's mother was so horrid to Sarah, believing her son was such a paragon and Sarah some desperate seductress...made me so mad. Sarah is a better person than I in that instance keeping the truth to herself instead of lashing back at the stuck up harpy.

It showed her good parental training when she resisted striking back at this awful woman. We got to see maybe why Dirk ended up the way he was.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Good point. She would definitely be a poisonous influence.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Yes, with a mother like that it's no surprise he turned into a serial killer. Definite mommy issues there...

~ Giulia ~ | 193 comments It's sad, but with his family's influence, telling the truth would've only brought more troubles upon Sarah and Frank. At least they know that no more girls will die because of him.

I believe you’re right, Giulia.
