I agree! Mary's mother was very selfish, it's no wonder that Mary turned out the way she did
You can tell that Mary needed affection from her mother, she may not have known at the time, but it's clear in the fifth chapter when she befriends Ben and Robin.
With Robin, she's like a different child, if only her mother wasn't so egocentric!
And yes the uncle! Didn't even bother to meet her when she first arrived! Gosh I would feel like a burden if I was Mary, unloved and unwanted by all. Pretty sad
Martha's nice, still getting used to her language again haha!
I love Robin too!

Yes, I wish she had given her more attention. She definitely needed it-every child needs.
Yeah, I was like-what the hell!
I mean she didn't get to see her mother often and now, not even the uncle! I was mad at him for half the book!
Martha's fun :)

Right?!
If I remember correctly, the uncle doesn't appear for most of the book?
I was a child myself when I first read this at school. Can you imagine a bunch of 11 year old kids reading Martha's English? 😂😂 it was pretty funny haha
You know if you liked this book, I reckon you'll like Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden, it's very similar but so much more detailed and mysterious. I reckon you'll love it!
Kate even adds Frances Hodgson Burnett as a character in her book for one small scene!

She never cared enough. Giving servants and everything isn't enough! Sometimes love and attention is all a child needs.
Obviously, Mary isn't so good herself but I guess she'll eventually turn out to be!
Her uncle? Don't even get me started! I do feel pity for him-for what happened with his wife and all, but he didn't even meet her! He has her all alone!
I like Martha. She's lively! And the bird.... it's sho sho cute!
