I was shocked by the attack and I thought the target was Meredith, but didn't have a clue why.

Given that usually in Karen Rose books something bad always happens to the heroine I knew Meredith was in danger. Doubly because of her line of work and we know that a bad guy from the last case hasn't been apprehended yet.
