If ever I'm in a similar predicament, I read something very different to what I'm doing (e.g. I'm about to re-read Thomas Mann's 'Doctor Faustus') and then something closer to what I'm doing ...
Only then do I try to move forward!

Wish I had some advice to offer but I tend to get stuck in the same position as you. :(
My suggestion would be to 1--pray about it and make sure it's a project God wants you to complete. 2--ask your friends who read it on how exactly you could make the layout less confusing. 3--set a manageable goal for yourself and just work on it a little each day/week, etc. Don't overwhelm yourself. 4--don't procrastinate on it! (that's a huge one for me) just buckle down and work on meeting your goal.
Hope this helps, Anna!

I'm hoping to write something of an allegory in the near future, and was just wondering what you expect/want from an allegory. The Christian life in sweeping strokes a la Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, the journey to belief like in C.S. Lewis' The Pilgrim's Regress, or something else? Something a little smaller? Like, specific situations/struggles from different walks? That's what I'm going towards, but I was wondering if anyone had specific situation suggestions. :)
The work is going to be fantasy fiction, with the three main characters being:
a) a new convert, saved in dramatic fashion and eager to learn/live everything he can
b) a long-time believer saddened by the fall of comrades and ever-encroaching apathy
c) a survivor at heart, struggling to decide to stay in a crumbling society she has grown to hate, or try to save it

Could anyone help me out or at least offer suggestions?
Have any of you ever gotten stalled out on writing a book?
