“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.”
While this book is obviously fiction, there are really important things that are associated with human society: memories need to be shared.
In this book, no one holds any memory from the past, except the Giver and the Receiver, who are decided by a community to have these roles as assignments. The people have chosen the world for convenience and safety. The people in this society never know pain, death, what actual family is, and even colors. However, Jonas (The Receiver) starts to feel differently about what he sees in his daily life, everything has its own color. Since he starts to receive the memories from the Giver, he realizes so many unknown things and he becomes more emotional as he gets memories of happy and sad things.
I personally really liked this book because the writer successfully mixes fiction and messages he wants to teach us about reality. In fact, when I was reading this book, I wondered so many times what I would do if I were Jonas or if this world were something like in this book. While this book amused me with the futuristic story, it also had me learn the importance of gaining wisdom from the past. Humans learn from the past about what we should do or what we should not do.
