Tori | 5 comments Unwind by Neal Shusterman is a science fiction novel that take place after a war. This book is a very interesting book, it is not like any other book that I have read before. It really made me think, although it was very creepy.

Unwind is about a society that makes abortions illegal and instead kids from ages thirteen to eighteen, before the age of thirteen and after eighteen the kids cannot be unwound, can be given up by their parents to the government. They take the kids and harvest their organs to be used for other people, this is what they call “unwinding”. This keeps the kids alive in the eyes of the society even though they are not around. Three kids run away because they are being given up to be unwound and make a journey together to make it to the age of eighteen.

Connor, the main protagonist, is a troublemaker all throughout the book. He seems to act out because he is bored. At the age of sixteen, Connor finds out his parents are going to have him be unwound because they simply cannot stand to handle his impulsive troublemaking. He has called himself tough but when it comes to running away, he only does it to stay alive, not to be rebellious.

Neal Shusterman wrote Unwind in three different point of views, the main focus was on Connor and the two other runaway kids, Risa and Lev. Personally, I liked this because it gave you an idea of what each character was thinking and feeling. Normally I do not like this because it can get confusing but I feel like with this plot, it worked very well. The main focus was on Connor and the two other runaway kids, Risa and Lev.

I recommend Unwind to more mature people, someone who can handle violence. I think this book is a good conversation starter for those who have read it. Who has control over our body and what we do with it, ourselves or the government? If you want a book that makes you think, this is a great book.
