My book review is on the book I read called Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. This book is unlike any other book I’ve read before because of its elements in both fantasy and in real life. Compared to Neil Gaiman’s other book which is called Stardust, I liked this book more because Stardust was only a fantasy book and I like realistic fiction more. The main characters in Neverwhere are Richard Mayhew, Door, Marquis De Carabas, Hunter, Mr. Coup, Mr. Vandemar, and Angel Islington. My favorite character is Door because I found it clever and interesting that she has a power where she can open a door anywhere she wants. The book Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is about a businessman, Richard Mayhew who is engaged to his fiance Jessica. On the way to their dinner reservation, they notice a girl (Door) who is bleeding out on the sidewalk. Only Richard helps this girl and this ends up causing Jessica to become extremely mad at him because he missed their dinner. Then, suddenly, he ends up in basically a new world which is London below. Richard helps Door escape the two evil men, Croup and Vandemar. Richard follows Door in hopes to find his way home but finds out she is on a mission to find out who murdered her family. Soon after when he’s in London above he notices that he has become invisible to everyone around him and goes back to London below to set things right. They then meet Hunter who is their bodyguard and fighter who helps them on their mission. They lastly meet the angel Islington who isn’t much of an angel at all because he said he’ll tell Door who killed her family, but only if they get the unique key and get Door to open the door to Heaven. After their journey Richard learned to value the true meaning of friendship, loyalty, and deception. I think the weakest part of the book is the general lack of character development throughout the novel. I think this because none of the characters personalities change from the beginning to the end of the book. I usually like to see characters change towards the end of a book but in this book, the characters mostly stayed the same. For instance, the Marquis is kind of selfish and stays selfish when he meets Richard because he knows he can easily torment him since he is naive and helpless. Overall, I enjoyed this book but noticed that it got kind of slow at around page 200 and was hard to finish. But at the end it picked up again and had a cool ending so it was worth it. I would recommend this book to anyone who knows they like the genre urban fantasy because Gaiman was good an incorporating both of these genres in his book.
